If you are a qualified, practising teacher, seeking to enhance your subject knowledge of mathematics and pedagogical skills, this could be the programme for you. It will develop your personal practice and whole school impact by improving your understanding of the primary mathematics curriculum, identifying school priorities and supporting you in working with colleagues to develop the teaching and learning of mathematics in your school. You will discover a range of approaches to teaching and learning and become conversant with the requirements of the national curriculum. A focus on curriculum influence, effective use of data sets in planning improvement, and theoretical perspectives on leadership and change management will further enhance your skills. The programme, which culminates in a school-centred practice-development project, also offers the opportunity to network and share good practice with colleagues from around the country and engage in critical debate about current issues in maths education.

In Depth

What will I study?

The early phase of the programme provides a strong focus on mathematics subject knowledge in relation to the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 curricula, including progression from the Early Years Foundation Stage and into Key Stage 3. You will have the opportunity to support this subject knowledge with an exploration of appropriate teaching strategies.

You will build on this by considering influences on the primary mathematics curriculum, as well as examining the importance of identifying, analysing and acting upon school/setting-based data sets. You will also develop a deeper understanding of developing, leading and implementing school improvement initiatives.

The programme culminates in you preparing a proposal for, and subsequently conducting, a practice development project tailored to the needs of your school.

How will I study?

The course is delivered in blended mode, with face-to-face sessions which are usually scheduled on Fridays at St James’ in Manchester.

As a blended programme, there is a teaching interface via a virtual learning environment through which you will have access to module and university library resources, activities and interactive support, both peer-to-peer and tutor-to-peer.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through coursework based on a range of professional learning activities and projects. Opportunities for formative feedback will be scheduled throughout each module.

Who will be teaching me?

The programme team have considerable expertise in the field of mathematics education and postgraduate professional learning. Tutors have recent and relevant experience of teaching and leading mathematics in primary schools.

MST4010Specialist Primary Mathematics 1 (30 credits)

Specialist Primary Mathematics 1 aims to deepen your mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogical skills in order to develop your own practice and support colleagues in improving the mathematical learning of all pupils within school. You will attend conference days, face-to-face sessions and online learning to support your development. Assessment will be based on a short classroom-based inquiry.

MST4011Specialist Primary Mathematics 2 (30 credits)

Specialist Primary Mathematics 2 enhances your knowledge of the Primary Mathematics curriculum. The module will deepen your mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogical skills in order to develop your practice as a Specialist Mathematics practitioner. You will also have the opportunity to critically evaluate your own practice, identifying appropriate methods for supporting colleagues in addressing and overcoming misconceptions in Mathematics.

MST4012Mathematics Curriculum Development 1 (30 credits)

Mathematics Curriculum Development 1 is designed to help you gain a deeper understanding of Primary Mathematics curricula, including subject strands, pedagogical processes and issues of progression. You will develop a deep and critical appreciation of recent, current and developing policy/legislation with relevance to Primary Mathematics curricula and assess its impact on teaching and learning experiences. Critical reflection on practice will enhance your understanding of the research-practice relationship in teaching and learning Primary Mathematics.

MST4013Mathematics Curriculum Development 2 (30 credits)

Mathematics Curriculum Development 2 considers the role of the Specialist Primary Mathematics Teacher in relation to leading improvements in Primary Mathematics teaching and learning.  You will develop a deeper understanding of developing, leading and implementing school improvement initiatives. The importance of identifying, analysing and acting upon school/setting-based data sets will be addressed and you will have the opportunity to engage in these processes in an educational setting.

MST4014Outstanding Mathematics Practice 1: The Project Proposal (20 credits)

Outstanding Mathematics Practice 1: The Project Proposal allows you to be supported and guided through preparation for a final practice project. The module involves an in-depth exploration of the practice-policy-theory relationship, concepts of practice as the embodiment of professional knowledge, and measures and models of quality and evaluation. Through these activities, you will plan a final practice-based project which can be undertaken and evaluated.

MST4015Outstanding Mathematics Practice 2: The Project (40 credits)

Outstanding Mathematics Practice 2: The Project requires you to conduct an extended project in your own practice and produce a report demonstrating a reflective and research-informed analysis of that practice.

Entry Criteria

Entry Requirements

The programme is suitable for qualified, practising teachers. To be accepted onto the programme you must match one of the following examples and be:

  • Teaching in a primary school, committed to improving the quality of learning and teaching of mathematics, and enthusiastic about becoming an ambassador for mathematics in both your own and other settings;
  • Teaching in a secondary or middle school, seeking a better understanding of the pedagogy of teaching Key Stage 2 mathematics, and wishing to develop your knowledge of the Key Stage 2 curriculum in order to facilitate a smooth transition into Key Stage 3;
  • Teaching in a secondary school, meeting the needs of children who have not reached expected standards of mathematics at the end of Key Stage 2;
  • Teaching in a special school, seeking to improve your mathematics subject knowledge, and able to differentiate for all learners through the use of a variety of pedagogies;
  • Teaching in a teaching school seeking support to deliver continuing professional development to other settings in the same cluster.

Places (subject to availability) will be allocated to all suitably qualified applicants who have the support and endorsement of their headteacher.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Edge Hill University recognises learning gained elsewhere, whether through academic credit and qualifications acquired from other relevant courses of study or through recognition of an individual’s professional and employment experience (also referred to as ‘experiential learning’).

Previous learning that is recognised in this way may be used towards meeting the entry requirements for a programme and/or for exemption from part of a programme. Career Prospects

What are my career prospects?

On completion of this programme, you will be well placed to apply for more senior roles both in your current school and at other institutions.

As a Specialist Primary Mathematics Practitioner, you will have the knowledge and skills to make a significant and positive contribution to a range of school improvement and school-to-school support initiatives.

Leadership development is a core part of the programme which will enable you to apply for leadership roles, such as Deputy Head or Specialist Leader of Education (SLE), in a range of educational contexts. You may also wish to apply to become a Mastery Specialist with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.

Finance

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for studying on this MA are £38 per credit for UK and EU students enrolling on the course in academic year 2020/21, i.e. £1,140 per 30 credit module.

180 credits are required to complete a Masters degree.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise in tuition fees, in line with Government policy, in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.
