If you have applied to study on the PGCE Secondary Religious Education with QTS (11-16) at Edge Hill University and require enhancement of your subject knowledge, then this course could be for you.

The aim of the course is to develop your subject knowledge in RE to prepare you to teach the major world faiths and philosophical arguments to learners aged 11-16 years.

The course is delivered online one day a week over eight weeks.

What you'll study

If you have a degree in Religious Studies related subject, or a degree which contains a small amount of religious or theological study alongside other subjects, and you wish to train as a Religious Education teacher then this course will be suitable for you prior to a Secondary Religious Education PGCE. It is designed for applicants without a breadth and depth of Religious Education study in their degree who may need to improve their subject knowledge as a condition of entry to the PGCE. The course could also be suitable if you have a Religious Studies or Theology degree but only specialised in a handful of faiths.

The course is designed to address subject knowledge including:

  • The 6 major world faiths e.g., Hinduism, Judaism and Buddhism
  • Explore beyond the big 6 e.g., Jainism and Mormonism
  • Developing knowledge of the lived nature of faith and belief
  • Exploration of places of worship
  • Investigating faith through the narratives of believers
  • The nature and context of ‘worldviews’ in an inclusive RE curriculum

How you'll study

The course is delivered for one day a week over an eight week period. The sessions will typically run from 10am to 4pm each day utilising a range of online platforms. Sessions will be a mixture of ‘lecture style’ live presentations, one-to-one tutorials and opportunities to engage with members of the various faith and worldview communities.

You can expect to receive your timetable at enrolment. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day or evening of the week.

How you'll be assessed

There are no formal examinations. You will need to complete a subject knowledge audit and an independent learning log which will demonstrate how your knowledge and understanding of the subject content has developed. You will be given guidance on how to do this in the initial session.
