Course in Depth
What will I study?
This three year degree is delivered within a supportive learning environment. It offers a variety of perspectives on health, ill health, health promotion, life sciences and nursing practice in a range of settings and comprises approximately 50% theory and 50% practice. It provides the opportunity to achieve national generic and child field-specific competency outcomes related to professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice, decision-making, leadership, management and team working.
In Year 1, as well as being introduced to your field of nursing, you will develop a wider knowledge of health and social care practice and the underpinning life sciences.
During Year 2 you will continue to develop your field-specific competencies alongside developing an understanding of the importance of research, life sciences and their application to nursing practice.
Year 3 will see you preparing to be an autonomous practitioner ready to deal with the competencies of current health and social care with a distinct identity as a children’s nurse.
This programme is commissioned by the NHS and therefore adheres closely to the NHS’ six core values. How will I study?
Seminars, lectures, work-based learning, tutorials and technology enhanced learning will be used to deliver this programme. The theory part of the programme is delivered during the normal working week (Monday to Friday). Most importantly service users, carers and their families will be involved in facilitating your learning so that you gain an understanding of the impact care has on individual groups.
You will spend 50% of your time in practice which will be undertaken in hospitals and community settings within the NHS, local authority, independent and voluntary organisations. You will be supported by a practice placement mentor/supervisor and a practice education facilitator.
Placements will include weekend, early morning, evening and night work to ensure access to a full range of practice experiences across 24 hour care. There is an opportunity to undertake a practice learning experience outside the region, within the United Kingdom or internationally.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment in both theory and practice is continuous, assessed against national outcomes and generic and field competencies, with students required to demonstrate evidence of their achievement. A range of assessment of theory procedures is in place including assignments, seminar presentations, advanced notice examinations, online learning activities, case studies and portfolio work.
Who will be teaching me?
All lectures are delivered by professionals within the field of nursing as well as specialists in other areas. The programme team represent a range of qualified, research-active professionals with extensive experience of working within the health and/or social care sector. Most importantly service users, carers and their families will be involved in facilitating your learning so that you gain an understanding about the impact care has on individual groups.

The leading edge clinical skills facilities include ward simulations and operating theatres with industry standard equipment, as well as robot-style mannequins that can simulate a wide range of symptoms, from pregnancy to a temperature, to ensure your learning experience is as realistic as possible.
The Faculty of Health and Social Care building also houses ten teaching rooms, an 860-seat lecture theatre and a number of social learning spaces.
Edge Hill University has excellent relationships with NHS hospital and community trusts, enabling us to offer practice-based learning opportunities across a variety of care contexts, with placements at more than 600 locations in Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire.
The faculty is home to a thriving research culture which includes a series of staff and student conference programmes, guest lectures and seminars, as well as active research groups.
PUP1178 Foundation Sciences for Nursing (30 credits)
Foundation Sciences for Nursing provides an introduction to the life sciences that underpin nursing. The focus will be on the theory and application of biological, psychological and social sciences, together with the pharmacological contexts that underpin contemporary nursing care. You will also develop a wide range of clinical assessment skills, e.g. temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure monitoring, and urinalysis.
PUP1179 Understanding Health and Social Care (30 credits)
Understanding Health and Social Care provides an introduction to the fundamentals of health and social care and explores the values and behaviours that underpin professional practice. The module is designed to help you to understand the principles of safe practice and introduce you to the many factors that influence the health and social wellbeing of all patients/clients across the fields of nursing. You will be immersed in the skills, knowledge and values essential for the development of patient/person-centred care. There will be an emphasis on the importance of service user experience and the need for effective partnership working.
PUP1181 Introduction to Children's Nursing (20 credits)
Introduction to Children’s Nursing familiarises you with the specific professional values and role of the children’s nurse. The module also examines the legal and ethical framework underpinning children’s nursing and considers the importance of family-centred care. You will develop key skills in the assessment of children and young people’s health and gain knowledge of physiological norms and learn how to identify causes for concern. One of the key aims of the module is to encourage working collaboratively with children, young people, their families and other professionals across a variety of settings in order to meet their needs.
PUP1184 Skills for Nursing Practice 1 (20 credits)
Skills for Nursing Practice 1 provides a safe and realistic environment for students to develop and practice their skills and knowledge prior to engaging in practice learning. The module will develop your ability to contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of person-centred care, demonstrate safe and effective communication skills, and begin to use evidence to support practice.
PUP1185 Nursing Practice 1 (20 credits)
Nursing Practice 1 recognises that the journey to professional nurse registration requires the acquisition of underpinning theoretical knowledge and skills and their practical application within the context of an inter-professional practice environment. You will learn across a range of practice experiences and be learning and practicing evidence-based skills alongside a range of health and social care professionals.
PUP2221 Learning in Inter-Professional Practice: Enhancing Competency (40 credits)
Learning in Inter-Professional Practice: Enhancing Competency is a practice based module which will enable you to develop your proficiency in accordance with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The specific focus of this module is to facilitate a greater understanding of the challenges of team working within the context of inter-professional care delivery.
PUP2222 Applied Sciences for Health and Wellbeing 1 (30 credits)
Applied Sciences for Health and Wellbeing 1 focuses on the disease process, its pathophysiology, homeostatic effects and the psychosocial factors involved. The pharmacological contexts will provide you with a clear understanding of the medicines management which underpins nursing care delivery. The continued development of key skills will enable you to undertake physical, clinical assessments of individuals/clients. This is essential for safe and effective care.
PUP2223 Research Methods in Health and Social Care (20 credits)
Research Methods in Health and Social Care is designed to facilitate understanding of the core elements that underpin the research process and the application of research evidence to practice. The module will develop your skills in relation to an appreciation of the need for good quality research within health and social care, along with the ability to appraise the quality of published research within your specific field of practice.
PUP2225 Acute Health Care (Child) (30 credits)
Acute Health Care (Child) will prepare you to care for children and young people who have acute health needs, either with a previous plan of care or as an emergency, in a variety of acute care situations in primary and/or secondary care. This could include caring for a child/young person with psychological, physical, mental, social and/or emotional needs. The module will also prepare you to collaborate with other professionals to meet the acute health care needs of children in order to increase wellbeing, enhance wellness and enable effective transition or discharge to their home environment.
PUP2233 Skills for Nursing Practice 2 (20 credits)
Skills for Nursing Practice 2 is designed to enhance generic and field specific skills for nursing. This will enable you to demonstrate an understanding of the required levels of competence and to recognise and respond to the more complex needs relevant to your field of practice. The module also provides opportunities for the enhancement of field specific practice skills and facilitates the consistent application of safe, compassionate, person-centred and evidenced-based care.
PUP2234 Nursing Practice 2 (20 credits)
Nursing Practice 2 provides the platform for you to extend your professional knowledge, culminating in a skill set that will demonstrate your increasing ability to practice autonomously. Practice learning opportunities across a range of settings and client groups enable you to continue to accumulate experience that enhances your developing confidence. A blend of both generic and field specific practice opportunities will ensure that you experience the challenges encountered within different health care service delivery models.
PUP3230 Learning in Inter-Professional Practice: Achieving Competency (40 credits)
Learning in Inter-Professional Practice: Achieving Competency is a practice-based module providing the opportunity to reflect on practice learning experiences to date, recognise current skill sets and identify areas for development, in order that you are fully prepared for professional life. Further exposure to practice learning enables you to develop the confidence to practice and demonstrate competence within your chosen field. There will also be an opportunity to gain experience of international health care provision.
PUP3231 Applied Sciences for Health and Wellbeing 2 (20 credits)
Applied Sciences for Health and Wellbeing 2 further develops the themes of pathophysiology and the psychosocial perspectives and interventions available within the health and social care context. Disease processes will be studied in relation to body systems, the aging process and death and dying. Appropriate clinical skills/assessment methods and techniques will continue to be taught and practiced in the skills laboratories
PUP3232 Preparing for the Professional Role (30 credits)
Preparing for the Professional Role develops effective leadership skills to enable you to work effectively with others, make improvements to services and contribute to care that is safe. This involves an understanding of professional accountability and the use of clinical governance processes to work effectively across professional boundaries. The module will enable you to become increasingly autonomous, work within complex teams and support the ongoing development of yourself and others.
PUP3234 Caring for the Child who has Complex/Critical/Life Limiting Conditions (30 credits)
Caring for the Child who has Complex/Critical/Life Limiting Conditions prepares you to care for children within a critical care setting, either as an emergency or as part of a long-term life limiting condition, in a variety of care situations in primary, secondary and/or tertiary care. Utilising an enquiry-based approach to support the delivery of key theories and practical skills, which are research and evidence based, you will be enabled to care for the child/young person with regards to their psychological, physical, mental, social and emotional needs.
PUP3267 Skills for Nursing Practice 3 (20 credits)
Skills for Nursing Practice 3 facilitates the development of more complex generic and field specific skills as well as skills required for clinical leadership, in order to prepare you for professional registration and employment. This will enable you to develop your confidence and competence in clinical decision-making and to act as a positive role model for others. Teaching and learning approaches include a variety of practice simulation activities, providing you with an opportunity to enhance your knowledge, skills and understanding relevant to your field.
PUP3268 Nursing Practice 3 (20 credits)
Nursing Practice 3 provides further exposure to practice learning to enable you to develop the confidence to practice and demonstrate competence within your chosen field. You will be encouraged to reflect on prior practice learning experiences, recognise current skill sets and identify areas for development, in order that you are fully prepared for a professional career. There will also be an opportunity to gain experience of international health care provision. Additionally, the modules requires the demonstration of your leadership, management, supervisory and team working skills within the context of a rapidly changing and challenging environment where health care delivery models are evolving.

112 UCAS Tariff points on the new UCAS Tariff, to include A Level grades BB or equivalent, plus at least five GCSEs at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent) which must include English Language and Mathematics.
Relevant natural and applied science subjects are preferred but not essential. Eligible candidates must provide evidence of study within the five years prior to application. An interview will form part of the selection process.
If you accept an offer from Edge Hill you will need to satisfy the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council in respect of physical and mental fitness and will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.
Some typical examples of how you can achieve 112 UCAS Tariff points are detailed below.
- A Levels – BBC;
- BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTEC QCF qualifications) – Distinction, Merit, Merit (DMM);
- Access to Higher Education Diploma – successful completion of Diploma to include at least 45 passed credits at Level 3.
Please note, the above examples may differ from actual offers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awards may also be accepted.
As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent), there is no maximum number of qualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. This includes additional qualifications such as the Welsh Baccalaureate and Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE), AS Levels that haven’t been continued to A Level, and General Studies AS or A Level awards.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Edge Hill University recognises learning gained elsewhere, whether through academic credit and qualifications acquired from other relevant courses of study or through recognition of an individual’s professional and employment experience (also referred to as ‘experiential learning’).
Previous learning that is recognised in this way may be used towards meeting the entry requirements for a programme and/or for exemption from part of a programme. It is your responsibility to make a claim for recognition of prior learning. What are my career prospects?
Career opportunities are excellent. NMC registration is recognised the world over and following registration as a Children’s Nurse you can pursue a career in a variety of settings. These include specialist children’s hospitals, general hospitals and paediatric community services/teams.
The course will also prove useful in the areas of leadership, management and consultancy. There are significant opportunities for further professional development and specialism.
If you are a UK or eligible EU student joining this pre-registration degree in academic year 2016/17 (i.e. March 2017 entry), you can expect your tuition fees to be paid by the Department of Health upon successful application to the NHS Business Services Authority.
If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will be joining this pre-registration degree in academic year 2017/18 (i.e. September 2017 or March 2018 entry), we expect tuition fees to be £9,250 per annum but this is currently subject to Government approval.Tuition fees for international students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2017/18 are £11,575 per annum.
If you are a UK or EU student joining this degree in academic year 2016/17 (i.e. March 2017 entry), you may be eligible to apply for a means-tested NHS Bursary, a non-means-tested NHS Grant, and a Maintenance Loan from the Government.
