    Promoting a values-driven and authentic leadership approach, this programme develops experienced doctors and new consultants as leaders and effective change agents. You will gain the skills, knowledge and self-awareness required to improve the quality of care, enhance service delivery and lead people through change in health and social care. The programme will enable you to critically reflect on your practice, consider your style of leadership, assess your decision-making skills and gain an insight into your personality, from influencing style to emotional intelligence and resilience.

    You will be encouraged to consider the type of leader and change agent that you are, the type of leader and change agent you aspire to be (and why), and the action that could be taken to enhance your leadership and change management development. On successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Leadership and have the option to progress onto a dedicated Medical Leadership and Development pathway on our MSc Leadership Development.

    What will I study?

    A key strand of the programme examines the personal attributes of a leader. You will develop leadership skills, reflect on your personality type and emotional intelligence, and gain an insight into your role within a team.

    Focus is also placed on change theories. You will consider how to lead others through the change process effectively, examine key theories, styles and tools, and critically reflect on your own actions and those of others.

    In addition to the two key compulsory modules, a third module is selected from the faculty’s professional development portfolio. You might choose to focus on the role of the clinical supervisor, examine the drivers for change and innovation, immerse yourself in strategic clinical leadership, or specialise in professionalism and ethics in a multi-disciplinary team.

    How will I study?

    The programme will be delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, master classes and critical debates.

    A flexible, blended learning approach is adopted, with predominantly face-to-face sessions complemented by occasional online units of study, supported by the University’s virtual environment, and additional coaching opportunities.

    Attendance is typically daytime, approximately three hours per module, although some modules incorporate online units of study.

    How will I be assessed?

    The assessment strategy will focus on the synthesis and critical application of theory to practice.

    A variety of assessment strategies will be used including essays, presentations, portfolios, a leadership development plan, reflective diaries and seminars.

    Who will be teaching me?

    The programme has been developed and will be delivered in collaboration with external stakeholders who hold senior and executive positions in health and social care.

    You will be taught by expert academic staff, many of whom publish in international journals and present at national and international conferences. A series of masterclasses will also be delivered by executive leaders in practice.

    The Medical Leadership module is co-delivered with the Royal College of Physicians.

    HEA4117Medical Leadership (20 credits)

    Medical Leadership examines the importance of the personal attributes of a leader, including emotional intelligence and personality type, using psychometric tools such as the Jungian Type Indicator (JTI). You will have the opportunity to analyse and reflect upon your personal effectiveness against Covey’s seven effectiveness domains. You will also use Belbin’s team roles as a way of understanding your own and others’ contributions to team meetings.

    HEA4038Leading People Through Change (20 credits)

    Leading People Through Change provides a critical and evaluative perspective on change theories, styles and tools in order to implement change in the context of health and social care.  The module will facilitate the further enhancement of skills in the transfer of theoretical perspectives to practice and enable you to critically reflect upon, and learn from, your actions and the actions of others.

    Assessment: Coursework: 100%.

    You will study 20 credits chosen from the following optional modules or the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine’s CPD portfolio (subject to agreement with the programme leader).

    CPD4706Teaching and Learning in the Medical Workplace (20 credits)

    Teaching and Learning in the Medical Workplace offers an introduction to the role of the Clinical Supervisor in the medical workplace. The module will raise your awareness of key concepts involved in teaching and facilitating learning, including understanding the theories of learning, the educational climate, adult learning, styles of learning, styles of teaching, clinical skills teaching and clinical workplace teaching. You will also explore your personal approach to teaching and peer observation of teaching and be introduced to reflective practice, workplace assessment and feedback, portfolios and supervision.

    HEA4207Developing a Business Case for Change and Innovation (20 credits)

    Developing a Business Case for Change and Innovation provides you with an opportunity to appraise the rationale, evidence-base and drivers for change. The module challenges you to explore the feasibility, viability and risks of a business case for change and innovation. You will also examine how your chosen business case should be communicated, implemented and evaluated.

    HEA4208Strategic Clinical Leadership (20 credits)

    Strategic Clinical Leadership provides a critical and evaluative perspective on leadership theories, styles and approaches in the context of health and social care. The module will facilitate the enhancement of your skills in the transfer of theoretical perspectives to practice and in the development of a strategic focus. You will critically appraise theoretical modelling frameworks of leadership and critically debate their relevance to current practice within the context of health and social care. You will also evaluate the multi-factorial influences which impact on the role of leaders within health and social care.

    HEA4220Promoting Professionalism and Ethics in Multidisciplinary Practice (20 credits)

    Promoting Professionalism and Ethics in Multidisciplinary Practice enables you to explore and critically appraise the notion of professionalism. You will critically examine ethical aspects associated with professionalism in healthcare, for example public expectations versus personal expression, to assist in reflective practice. The aim is to encourage you to critically reflect on your practices and values when working in a multi-disciplinary team. You will explore ways in which an individual can validate and support the development of professionalism, creating a professional environment in healthcare settings and role-modelling professional values and behaviours to enhance both the patient experience and the sharing of best practice.

    Entry Requirements

    To join this programme, you must have a degree in Medicine and be registered with the General Medical Council. You must also be working in a health and social care environment.

    An interview will form part of the selection process.

    What are my career prospects?

    In an increasingly competitive health service, health and social care staff need to continually seek opportunities to add to their portfolio of qualifications to advance their careers. This is particularly true for doctors where a postgraduate qualification is increasingly perceived as highly desirable.

    This Postgraduate Certificate will equip you with a range of leadership and change management skills. It provides a highly relevant qualification which demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional development and prepares you to apply for a wide variety of roles within service improvement and project management. Specifically, you will be prepared for consultant interviews and the transition to employment as a consultant. You will also be prepared for appraisal and re-validation in relation to leadership and management standards.


    Tuition Fees

    Tuition fees for studying on this Postgraduate Certificate are £37.50 per credit for UK and EU students enrolling on the programme in academic years 2020/21 or 2021/22, i.e. £750 per 20 credit module.

    60 credits are required to complete a Postgraduate Certificate.

    The University may administer a small inflationary rise in part-time postgraduate tuition fees in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.
