      If you have applied, or are considering applying, to study on the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS at Edge Hill University, this course has been designed to enhance your subject knowledge in mathematics.

      If you have GSCE Mathematics at Grade B or Grade 6 (or equivalent), this subject knowledge enhancement course will enable you to further develop your mathematical subject knowledge to the required level. It is also suitable for applicants to the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS who achieved GCSE Mathematics at Grade A or Grade 7 (or equivalent) who wish to refresh their subject knowledge.

      The aim of the course is to prepare you to teach the conceptual and applied aspects of the subject effectively, with competence, enthusiasm and confidence, to learners aged 5-11 years. It will cover the four operations used to solve equations, as well as fractions, decimals and percentages, geometry and statistics, and overarching themes such as problem-solving, fluency and reasoning.

      What will I study?

      This subject knowledge enhancement course is designed for applicants without a breadth and depth of mathematical study in their degree, who may need to improve their subject knowledge as a condition of entry to the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS.

      The course is designed to:

      • Address gaps in your subject knowledge;
      • Develop your enthusiasm for working mathematically and to see yourself as a mathematician;
      • Inspire you to promote learning in mathematics that is challenging and engaging for all students;
      • Identify and build upon your prior learning and develop your capacity for future self-study;
      • Understand how mathematics is used in society;
      • Develop an understanding of the connections that exist between topics in mathematics;
      • Develop your use of appropriate technology in teaching and learning.

      How will I study?

      The course is typically delivered for up to one day a fortnight over an eight-week period. Face-to-face sessions will typically run from approximately 10am to 4pm, complemented by online learning and supported self-study.

      How will I be assessed?

      There are no formal examinations. You will build a reflective portfolio from directed activities.

      A Great Study Environment

      Housed in a state-of-the-art £9million building, the Faculty of Education enjoys a stunning setting from both its lakeside and piazza buildings.

      Facilities in the lakeside building include a 300-seat lecture theatre, five well-equipped ICT suites, and 18 teaching rooms complete with the latest technology. The lakeside building is also home to a popular vegan and vegetarian cafe where students can meet to socialise and discuss their studies.

      The nearby piazza building offers modern facilities including a lecture theatre and a number of seminar rooms.

      You may apply for the course if you have been offered a place on the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS at Edge Hill University, have GCSE Mathematics at Grade B or Grade 6 (or equivalent), and need to enhance your mathematical subject knowledge.

      You may also apply for the course if you have been offered a place on the PGCE Primary Mathematics Specialist with QTS at Edge Hill University, have GCSE Mathematics at Grade A or Grade 7 or above (or equivalent), and wish to refresh your mathematical subject knowledge.

      Tuition Fees

      There are currently no tuition fees for this subject knowledge enhancement programme which is funded by the Department for Education.

      If you need to complete a subject knowledge enhancement programme during academic year 2021/22, you may be eligible to receive a bursary of £175 per week. To be eligible for this bursary, you must have accepted a conditional offer of a place on a PGCE, with completion of a subject knowledge enhancement course as one of the offer conditions. Please note, additional Department for Education eligibility criteria will also apply.
