      Offering a unique blend of critical approaches to the study of culture, combined with practical experience of working in the creative economy of a major European city, this taught Masters degree prepares the international creative makers, organisers and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. You will the gain experience of working in the cultural industries, an insight into critical approaches to culture, an international perspective on culture and creativity, and a detailed knowledge of the international creative economy. This will be achieved through the exploration of theatre, film and TV, museums, galleries, publishing and the music industry. You will learn from expert practitioners in the cultural industries and undertake rigorous training in understanding culture. A work placement and international field trip are key features of the programme. You will also have the opportunity to shape your pathway of study around your own interests, including work experience, cultural criticism, and creative fieldwork and production.

      What will I study?

      Compulsory modules explore critical approaches to culture, provide practical knowledge of the creative industries, and include a 20-day placement in a partner cultural organisation in the north west of England. You will also have opportunities to participate in an international field trip, undertake training in a modern language, and produce an extended piece of individual research.

      You can tailor the programme to your own interests through your optional module selection. The elective module on the programme enables you to gain expertise in marketing, entrepreneurship, publishing, media, cultural representations of Liverpool, or Screenlife filmmaking techniques.

      How will I study?

      The programme will primarily be delivered through a series of three-hour campus-based group sessions, incorporating a combination of lectures and seminars. These group sessions will be complemented by tutorials and independent study, as well as a work placement and international field trip.

      How will I be assessed?

      You will be assessed through a combination of essays, reports, a dissertation and other forms of critical reflection. The work placement is assessed via a reflective journal and in-situ discussion.

      Who will be teaching me?

      The programme is taught by experts from the Institute for Creative Enterprise (ICE) and Department of Creative Arts at Edge Hill University. You will learn from specialists in the fields of cultural and critical theory, media and film studies, and the performing and creative arts.

      ICE provides the gateway for researchers within the University to collaborate with external partners across the cultural industries and the creative and digital economy in the North West of England, as well as across the UK and internationally.

      You will also be taught by professionals from the fields of filmmaking and international creative enterprise who have many years of experience working in the cultural industries.

      The foyer and open ground floor area in Creative Edge.International Creative Enterprise students are based in Creative Edge, a state-of-the-art £17million building offering highly contemporary suites of outstanding facilities for the Department of Creative Arts.

      Key features include TV studios with broadcast capacity and full production capabilities, recording studios, sound-editing suites, animation studios, photographic studio, radio studio and multimedia laboratory.

      The building also features a lecture theatre, seminar rooms, IT facilities and smaller tutorial spaces, as well as social learning areas which encourage a more informal and interactive style of learning.

      MED4001The Culture Industry (20 credits)

      The Culture Industry takes a deep theoretical and historical dive into the production of culture. The module draws on the texts of the modern philosophical and critical tradition and places them in the context of international creative enterprise. It will examine the origins of culture as a concept, the relationship between culture and the economy, how different societies produce culture, and how we account for the politics of culture and culture wars. You will have the opportunity to consider the tools we have to understand the meaning of culture today, as well as the significance of ‘heritage’ and the role of history in the contemporary culture industry.

      MED4002Working in the International Creative Economy (20 credits)

      Working in the International Creative Economy provides a practitioner-led account of the practical concerns of cultural institutions. The module will be taught by leading figures in the North West creative economy. It will examine the priorities for cultural policy in the UK and explore how leaders of cultural organisations balance the competing concerns of government, funders, the public, and cultural necessity. You will consider how best to understand the problem of access and audiences for cultural institutions, while also reflecting on the role of entrepreneurship in the creative economy. With input from industry professionals, the module will provide you with first-hand experience of organisational issues and policy debates in the creative economy in a variety of cultural and institutional settings.

      Assessment: Coursework: 50%, Practical(s): 50%.

      MED4003Creative Industry Placement (40 credits)

      Creative Industry Placement involves a 20-day placement in a cultural organisation in the north west of England with a partner organisation of the Institute for Creative Enterprise. Partners include Arts Council England, Bluecoat (Liverpool), Creative Lancashire, Culture Liverpool, Digital Lancashire, Everyman cinemas, Liverpool’s Everyman and Playhouse theatres, FACT, HOME, Hurricane Films, LA Productions, Liverpool Film Office, Liverpool Irish Festival, MediaCityUK, National Museums & Galleries Liverpool, Open Eye Gallery, RIBA North, Royal Court Liverpool, Sound City, Tate Liverpool, UNESCO, Unity Theatre, and Writing on the Wall. The module will enable you to gain experience and develop professional skills in a practical setting within the culture industry. You will have a work-based mentor and be provided with a directed programme of activity relevant to the placement setting. You will use your prior knowledge of critical theory and the cultural industries to self-reflect on your experience and how you progress on the placement.

      Assessment: Coursework: 100%.

      MDM4021Dissertation Project (60 credits)

      Dissertation Project allows you to develop your knowledge and critical understanding of the field of media by means of a sustained, rigorous, critical and systematic piece of independent academic research. This will be either in the form of a traditional dissertation, industry research dissertation or practice-as-research project on a defined relevant topic of your choice. You will acquire the confidence to appropriate, critique and expand existing theories, analysis and methodologies and present the results of your original findings to a larger academic (and, where appropriate, industry-related) audience.

      Assessment: Coursework: 100%.

      MED4005Dissertation (60 credits)

      Dissertation enables you to plan, undertake and complete a critically engaged, coherent, substantial and advanced piece of independent study. You will produce a 10,000-word dissertation on a topic relevant to cultural literacy, the contemporary creative economy, and/or the business of managing a cultural organisation. The project can constitute either an extended analysis of texts and concepts or an extended reflection of your experience working within the creative economy, including your own cultural practice. The module will enable you to develop your writing and analytical skills to a high level commensurate with professional practice in the creative economy.

      BUS4034Marketing: A Critical Introduction (20 credits)

      Marketing: A Critical Introduction invites you to take a critical and reflective approach to a range of well-established marketing concepts to examine their relevance and applicability for the contemporary global world in which we live. You will adopt a critical and evaluative approach to digital marketing.

      Assessment: Coursework: 100%.

      BUS4530Entrepreneurship (20 credits)

      Entrepreneurship provides you with a broad introduction to enterprise and entrepreneurship. An inter-disciplinary approach is taken but some emphasis is placed on marketing because of the increasingly competitive environment within which entrepreneurship is often practiced. The module considers the central philosophies of marketing theory and practice and examines them from an entrepreneurial perspective. You will also examine the development of entrepreneurial skills in areas such as communication, working in teams, self-management and problem solving.

      MCW4009Cultural Industries (20 credits)

      Cultural Industries introduces you to, and enhances your knowledge of, various publishing industries (commercial, trade and independent), fields of contemporary literary production, and the role(s) of the creative writer within the publishing world and other creative and cultural environments. You will engage in both professional research which will be developed and encouraged via lectures, seminars and workshops. You will submit a piece of work to a target publication (or other context, conduit or medium) and record your research and the process of submission.

      MDM4006Transnational Media (20 credits)

      Transnational Media examines some of the implications of the production and consumption of media and investigate how media are used by, and reflect, the increasing transnational experiences of audiences. It approaches the topic of globalisation from two distinct but complementary perspectives: one focused on the workings and assimilation processes of the cultural industries and one interested in issues of identities and influenced by cultural studies.

      MDM4020Media and Creative Industries (20 credits)

      Media and Creative Industries will describe and analyse the changing economic forces which direct and constrain the choices of managers in various sub sectors of the media and creative industries. The module will develop your knowledge and understanding of economic and policy concepts and issues in the context of the media and creative industries. You will gain an understanding of contemporary media contexts – industrial, political, scholarly and practical – and develop the related autonomous research skills and professional practices. The module will examine television, film, music, print and online digital industries.

      MED4004Deconstructing Liverpool (20 credits)

      Deconstructing Liverpool focuses on the cultural representation of Liverpool and the surrounding city region in popular culture, from film, television and music to novels and art. The module will explore how Liverpool has featured in popular culture and how a regional identity has been constructed through its cultural representations. You will assess how we can read and create against preconceived images and ideas in relation to the place and people of the contemporary Liverpool city region, as well as how can we apply our knowledge of cultural theory and organisations to gain an understanding of the creative economy of Liverpool city region today. The module will enhance your skills in critical analysis and close reading, while providing supplementary augmentation to the work-based experience of operating within a regional cultural organisation.

      MED4006Screenlife (20 credits)

      Screenlife equips you with advanced skills in immersive, online filmmaking using the Screenlife technology and principles pioneered by Timur Berkmambetov. The module combines the acquisition of a highly-developed skillset in digital filmmaking with a deep appreciation of concepts and forms in storytelling, and the history of cinema. You will develop a deep knowledge of the Screenlife platform and its technical capabilities and gain a profound understanding of aesthetic and conceptual issues in Screenlife storytelling. The module supplements this with insight into the place of the platform in the wider context of the history of world cinema and contemporary creative enterprise. Developing resilience for independent and remote creative working in creative digital and media, you will also harness a robust capacity to adapt to transformations in the film industry and international creative enterprise under the accelerated change of digital innovation and artificial intelligence. Working as part of a team, you will produce a short film based on Screenlife technology and principles, individually reflect on the production and have the opportunity to share it on the Screenlife platform. Industry professionals with proven track records in the production of the Screenlife format will deliver masterclasses within the module.

      You will also study a modern language via the University’s Language Steps programme at a level appropriate to your prior experience. This will form an integrated 20-credits on the programme.

      You should have a degree equivalent to UK first-class or second-class honours (2:2 or above) in a relevant subject in the arts, humanities or social sciences.

      You may also be able to join the programme without a degree if you have appropriate professional qualifications or experience and can demonstrate this in a submitted portfolio.

      An interview forms part of the selection process.

      English Language Requirements

      International students require IELTS 6.5, with a score no lower than 6.0 in each individual component, or an equivalent English language qualification.

      If your current level of English is half a band lower, either overall or in one or two elements, you may want to consider our Pre-Sessional English course.

      Career Prospects

      What are my career prospects?

      On successful completion of this programme, you will be well placed to work in the cultural industries, such as theatre, film and TV, museums and galleries, publishing, the music industry, or as an entrepreneur.

      Potential roles include creative entrepreneurship, film and media production, arts management and policy, museums and galleries administration, theatre management and creative practice, music industry executive, festival organisation, digital and technological creativity, or founding and running an independent arts organisation.

      Alternatively, you may wish to undertake further study and research in creative enterprise or critical approaches to culture.


      Tuition Fees

      Tuition fees for full-time study on this MA are £7,000 for UK students and £13,500 for international students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2022/23.

      Tuition fees for part-time study on this MA are £39 per credit for UK students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2022/23. This is equivalent to £780 per 20 credit module.

      180 credits are required to complete a Masters degree.

      EU/EEA and Swiss students who have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, may be eligible for the UK tuition fee rate.
