    This is a Level 6 conversion programme, giving you the opportunity to progress from a foundation degree (or equivalent) to an honours degree in a relevant subject.

    To support the challenges of the Children’s Workforce reform, this conversion degree has been developed to give you the opportunity to develop additional skills, knowledge and competencies within the new integrated children’s services.

    You will enhance your skills in critical analysis and research with the ability to recognise how that information can be interpreted and applied to future working situations. The programme also provides an opportunity to enhance your skills in reflective practice and learn to work across professional and traditional boundaries, meeting the challenges of perpetual change.

    What will I study?

    There are two subject specific core modules on the programme, ‘Safeguarding Children and Young People’ and ‘Health and Wellbeing in Children and Young People’.

    These modules are directed towards those who work with children and young people in educational, social or health care settings. One module focuses on Every Child Matters and the current safeguarding agenda to enable children to reach their potential, the other covers the major determinants affecting the health economic and social well-being of children, young people and their families. You will address inequalities and explore interventions aimed at tackling such inequalities to ensure that the best outcomes are afforded to children and young people.

    You will also study a compulsory research module, learning the research methodologies and skills required to complete a core dissertation.

    The programme is completed with a further 20 credit module which enables you to explore areas such as the current safeguarding agenda, legislation around vulnerable children and young people, or leadership styles and management processes.

    How will I study?

    You will learn through a variety of methods, including seminars, lectures, work-based learning and tutorials.

    How will I be assessed?

    As you progress through the assessment process you will develop increasing levels of skills in analysing and critiquing the literature. You will acquire research methods and an ability to recognise how that information can be interpreted and applied to future working situations.

    Assessment will be undertaken through assignments and a seminar presentation, further developing your communication and public speaking skills.

    Who will be teaching me?

    You will be taught by a module team which consists of senior lecturers with comprehensive experience within a variety of health, community and other social contexts of children’s services, together with staff who are research active within the subject area.

    HUG3100Dissertation (30 credits)

    Dissertation enables you to focus on an area of vocational interest, or concern, which is identified by yourself and agreed with your supervisor. You will engage in a structured review of the literature related to the specific area of study, apply critical analysis to the literature and make recommendations that could improve service provision.

    HUG3113Protecting Children and Young People at Risk (20 credits)

    Protecting Children and Young People at Risk provides you with the opportunity to critically reflect upon and evaluate child protection policy and practice as well as develop skills and knowledge in enhancing practice development. You will critically analyse government policy and the law in relation to protecting children and evaluating evidence, with a particular emphasis being placed on collaboration, communication and partnership working, across organisational and professional boundaries. You will develop your knowledge and critical analysis skills and apply this to practice, fostering a positive and innovative change in culture.


    Assessment: Coursework: 60%, Practical(s): 40%.

    HUG3114Health, Economic and Social Wellbeing of Children and Young People (30 credits)

    Health, Economic and Social Wellbeing of Children and Young People explores the major social determinants affecting the health, economic and social wellbeing of children and young people and their families. Interventions aimed at tackling inequalities to make sure the best outcomes are afforded to children and young people will also be examined.


    Assessment: Coursework: 60%, Practical(s): 40%.

    HUG3263Research Methodology (20 credits)

    Research Methodology will enable you to develop an understanding of the research process. The module will also familiarise you with the nature and variety of research methods together with the need for an evidence base to guide the decision-making process. You will evaluate qualitative and quantitative methods, examining both the positive and negative aspects of both approaches, in order to determine how each approach can be seen as equally valuable and often complementary.

    You will select one of the following modules:

    HEA3065Negotiated Learning Shell (20 credits)

    Negotiated Learning Shell offers an opportunity for you to study a topic or work related issue at degree level. It involves you identifying the chosen area for study, developing and negotiating a learning contract (which will outline the what, how, when, where and why of the study period), as well as the means of assessment to showcase the acquired learning.

    HUG3109Safeguarding Children and Young People (20 credits)

    Safeguarding Children and Young People focuses on Every Child Matters and the current safeguarding agenda to enable children to reach their potential. In the critical analysis of challenging issues, you will expand your knowledge through the integration of research and theory, tackling complex issues and developing problem solving abilities. Working in partnership, communication and collaboration are central to the provision of specific support and services for children and young people and integration of services is central to the ethos of the module. There is a need to fully appreciate the rights of children and young people in law and this module actively fosters this concept.

    HUG3138Vulnerable Children, Young People And The Law (20 credits)

    Vulnerable Children, Young People And The Law enables you to gain an understanding of current legislation as it applies to contemporary practice with vulnerable children, young people and their families. The module will extend your knowledge of law, ethics and concepts of vulnerability and accountability. It encourages you to critically analyse legislation and to apply anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive principles to current practice with children and young people.

    Entry Criteria

    Entry Requirements

    You are normally required to demonstrate 120 credits at level 5 or equivalent, i.e. you should have completed a Foundation Degree in Integrated Practice (Early Years and Children or Young People), or other relevant foundation degree or DipHE, for example a DipHE in Nursing.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

    Edge Hill University recognises learning gained elsewhere, whether through academic credit and qualifications acquired from other relevant courses of study or through recognition of an individual’s professional and employment experience (also referred to as ‘experiential learning’). This may include credit or learning undertaken at another university.

    Previous learning that is recognised in this way may be used towards meeting the entry requirements for a programme and/or for exemption from part of a programme. It is your responsibility to make a claim for recognition of prior learning.     Tuition Fees

    If you are a prospective UK student who will be joining this conversion degree on a full-time basis in academic year 2021/22, the tuition fee will be £9,250 (subject to final Government approval).

    If you are a prospective UK student who will be joining this conversion degree on a part-time basis in academic year 2021/22, the tuition fee will be £77 per credit, i.e. £1,540 per 20 credit module (subject to final Government approval). 120 credits are required to complete a conversion degree.

    EU students who have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, may be eligible for the UK tuition fee rate.

    The University may administer a small inflationary rise in part-time tuition fees, in line with Government policy, in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.

    Financial Support

    Subject to eligibility, UK students joining this conversion degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK students enrolling on the programme may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs.
