    This MHealth Res focuses on the production of a substantial piece of work in a chosen specialist area of interest which is negotiated upon entry to the course.

    The programme will equip you with extensive knowledge and understanding of the research process, research methods and methodologies. You will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a deep and advanced knowledge of your specialist topic of study and evidence-based practice while engaging in independent research practice to a high standard.

    This will ultimately translate into you designing, delivering and evaluating a research project from inception to successful completion, with the support and guidance of experts in healthcare practice.

    What will I study?

    The programme begins with two distinct 30-credit research modules which cover advanced critical appraisal skills and clinical research methods.

    These modules are undertaken at the start of the programme in order to develop your research skill-set and advance your knowledge of best practice, as well as enhance the techniques most relevant and useful to your research proposal.

    On completion of the two opening modules you will have acquired an advanced understanding of how to develop, manage and conduct your dissertation. The remaining two-thirds of the programme are then devoted to undertaking specialist study in your chosen subject area, culminating in a written thesis.

    How will I study?

    Initially, you will attend classes in research methods and project design, development, planning and management.

    Thereafter, the programme is primarily delivered by individually tailored supervision from one or two specialist tutors, with regular meetings taking place either face-to-face or online.

    How will I be assessed?

    The taught research modules are assessed by critiquing a health research paper (written and oral presentation) and by the development of a research proposal. This proposal can then feed into the dissertation which is assessed through completion of a 25,000-word thesis and a viva voce examination.

    Who will be teaching me?

    The programme is delivered by a core team with specialist expertise in clinical research methods, research project development and the philosophy and ethics of clinical research.

    HEA4065Clinical Research Part 1: Critical Appraisal (30 credits)

    Clinical Research Part 1: Critical Appraisal introduces you to the research process through the recognition of the fundamental stages of research design. Based on the principles of ‘Good Clinical Practice’ and wider health and wellbeing research, you will focus on appraisal of the research question, design, methods, ethical issues, and data management and analysis strategies. In addition, you will be introduced to the principles of critical appraisal and modes of critical analysis in order that knowledge, regarding research design, can be applied to develop appropriate critical appraisal skills.

    Assessment: Coursework: 60%, Practical(s): 40%.

    HEA4066Clinical Research Part 2: Developing a Research Proposal (30 credits)

    Clinical Research Part 2: Developing a Research Proposal introduces you to the research process including philosophical fundamentals of both quantitative and qualitative traditions and a range of research methodologies. The module will guide you through the crucial stages of developing a research proposal. From conceptualisation of the research question, choosing the most appropriate design, planning methods, addressing ethical issues, identifying data management and data analysis strategies, and planning dissemination, the module will introduce you to various clinical and practitioner research approaches and the necessary considerations to enable a rigorous plan of enquiry.

    HEA4074Clinical and Health Research Dissertation (120 credits)

    Clinical and Health Research Dissertation provides you with the opportunity to undertake in-depth and extended research into your chosen area of interest. Through consultation with an appropriate supervisor (or team of supervisors), the module enables you to develop a detailed and sustained line of analysis that is personal to your research interests. Developing both oral and written skills, the module will foster guided independent inquiry that will culminate in a critical work of substantial length and sustained inquiry.

    Entry Criteria

    Entry Requirements

    To join this programme, you should have a first class or upper second class honours degree in a cognate subject area or discipline. In exceptional circumstances, students with a lower second class honours degree classification may be admitted.

    Each applicant will be required to submit a 500-word research proposal outlining the intended focus of their studies and demonstrating their enthusiasm and commitment towards the proposed subject. A formal registration interview/viva will be held for each candidate. The interview will be conducted by at least two members of staff, including the likely MHealth Res supervisor.

    English Language Requirements

    International students require IELTS 7.0, with a score no lower than 6.5 in each individual component, or an equivalent English language qualification.

    If your current level of English is half a band lower, either overall or in one or two elements, our Pre-Sessional English course might be for you.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

    Edge Hill University recognises learning gained elsewhere, whether through academic credit and qualifications acquired from other relevant courses of study or through recognition of an individual’s professional and employment experience (also referred to as ‘experiential learning’).

    What are my career prospects?

    The programme has been developed in response to drivers that require professionals in health and social care to develop an evidence-based approach to practice.

    An MHealth Res qualification will significantly enhance your CV and improve your future employment prospects while also equipping you with an array of research skills to help develop your professional practice.

    The skills and experience acquired through the programme also provide essential preparation for progressing onto higher research qualifications, such as MPhil and PhD.


    Tuition Fees

    Tuition fees for full-time study on this MHealth Res are £4,260 for UK and EU students and £13,250 for international students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2020/21.

    Tuition fees for part-time study on this MHealth Res are £2,130 per annum for UK and EU students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2020/21.

    The University may administer a small inflationary rise in part-time postgraduate tuition fees in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.
