This innovative degree combines the teaching of children’s nursing and social work into one single programme. It provides a thorough understanding of health promotion and social inclusion, as well as the skills to support some of the most vulnerable children in society. By combining the core values of children’s nursing and social work you will gain the knowledge required for a developing and integrated workforce, enabling you to apply your unique abilities as a children’s nurse and as a social worker. This degree enables you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified children’s nurse and to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a qualified social worker.

Course in Depth

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will be introduced to foundation knowledge which includes an introduction to nursing in general as well as the specific field of children’s nursing and social work.

In Year 2 there is a focus on the assessment of the health and support of children with health and/or social care needs .

Year 3 will prepare you to be an automonous practitioner, competent and safe for practice and ready to deal with the complexities of current health and social care practice, but also as a practitioner with a distinct identity as a nurse and social worker.

This programme is commissioned by the NHS and therefore adheres closely to the NHS’ six core values. These values, enshrined within the NHS Constitution, have been developed by patients, the public and staff to inspire passion in the NHS, guide it in the 21st century, and provide common ground for cooperation in achieving shared aspirations. How will I study?

The programme is delivered through varied activities including lectures, lecturer/student led seminars, practice/clinical skills workshops, simulated learning, personal study, technology enhanced learning and practice placements. Additionally, you will be taught by professionals from current practice, employers and, perhaps most importantly, service users, carers and their families who receive such services.

Central to the programme is the opportunity to undertake a range of placement opportunities in both nursing/health and social work settings across the three years of study. These placements will be undertaken in hospital, community and residential settings and include child, adult, mental health, learning disability clients in both nursing and social work practice areas.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a range of formative and summative assessments including essays, exams, presentations and the compilation of a personal development portfolio. You will also be assessed in practice.

Who will be teaching me?

The teaching team represent a range of qualified, research-active professionals with extensive experience of working in the health and social work sector.

Additionally you will be taught by professionals from current practice, employers and, perhaps most importantly, carers and their families who receive such services.

Offering some of the best facilities for health and social care students in the country, the innovative £14m Faculty of Health and Social Care building provides outstanding teaching and learning resources.

The leading edge clinical skills facilities include ward simulations and operating theatres with industry standard equipment, as well as robot-style mannequins that can simulate a wide range of symptoms, from pregnancy to a temperature, to ensure your learning experience is as realistic as possible.

The Faculty of Health and Social Care building also houses ten teaching rooms, an 860-seat lecture theatre and a number of social learning spaces.

Edge Hill University has excellent relationships with NHS hospital and community trusts, enabling us to offer practice-based learning opportunities across a variety of care contexts, with placements at more than 600 locations in Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire.

The faculty is home to a thriving research culture which includes a series of staff and student conference programmes, guest lectures and seminars, as well as active research groups.

Year 1

PUP1190 Integrated Practice Learning: Developing Capability (40 credits)

Integrated Practice Learning: Developing Capability enables you to learn and apply skills and knowledge within the University setting and on practice placements where you will experience direct work with people and other professionals.

PUP1191 Foundation Sciences for Nursing and Social Work (20 credits)

Foundation Sciences for Nursing and Social Work provides an introduction to the life sciences that underpin nursing and social work. The focus of the module will be on the theory and application of biological, psychological, social sciences and the pharmacological contexts of contemporary practice.

PUP1192 Understanding Health and Social Work (20 credits)

Understanding Health and Social Work introduces you to the fundamental principles of nursing and social work. It explores the context, values and behaviours that underpin professional practice and is designed to prepare you in readiness for direct practice.

PUP1193 Introduction to Integrated Children's Nursing and Social Work (20 credits)

Introduction to Integrated Children’s Nursing and Social Work explores the specific professional values and role of the integrated children’s nurse social worker. This includes the legal and ethical framework underpinning children’s nursing and social work and the importance of family centred care. You will be enabled to develop key skills in the assessment of the health and social needs of children and young people, their families and communities.

PUP1195 Law, Policy and Practice (20 credits)

Law, Policy and Practice introduces you to the legal and social policy frameworks relating to nursing and social work practice. It considers legal systems, including nursing and social work legal duties and responsibilities, and the application of these to various practice settings. It will enable you to explore the relationship between the law and professional practice and examines the ethical and moral dimensions of applying the law in specific areas.

Year 2

PUP2304 Integrated Practice Learning: Enhancing Competency (40 credits)

Integrated Practice Learning: Enhancing Competency gives you the opportunity to apply evidence based approaches to working within two discrete placements in the nursing and social work practice area. The specific focus for this module is to facilitate greater understanding of the challenges of teamwork within the context of inter-professional practice, culminating in you demonstrating your ability to practice with safety and effectiveness.

PUP2305 Social Theory and Applied Health Sciences 2 (30 credits)

Social Theory and Applied Health Sciences 2 provides you with an opportunity to develop your theoretical understanding of key drivers which underpin the principles of nursing and social work. You will focus on the topic of health and social wellbeing and the contributory factors which determine the public health and social care agenda.

PUP2306 Research Practice in Health and Social Work (20 credits)

Research Practice in Health and Social Work is designed to facilitate your understanding of the core elements that underpin the research process and the application of research evidence to practice. You will develop, in this module, an understanding of the research process and the need for an evidence base to guide decision-making in health and social care practice.

PUP2307 Integrated Working in Acute Health and Social Work Settings (30 credits)

Integrated Working in Acute Health and Social Work Settings prepares you to care for children and young people who have acute health and social care needs, either with a previous plan of care or as an emergency, in a variety of acute situations in primary and/or secondary care/universal services. This module will also begin to develop your ability to focus on critical reflection.

Year 3

PUP3249 Integrated Practice Learning: Achieving Proficiency (40 credits)

Integrated Practice Learning: Achieving Proficiency provides the opportunity for you to reflect on prior practice learning experiences, recognise current skill sets and identify areas for development in order that you are fully prepared for professional life. Further exposure to practice will enable you to develop the confidence to practice within nursing and social work and form an integrated perspective on these roles.

PUP3250 Social Theory and Applied Health Sciences 3 (30 credits)

Social Theory and Applied Health Sciences 3 examines the pathophysiology and psychological perspectives and interventions available within the health and social care context. The module focuses specifically on two detailed themes – the disease processes in relation to body systems and working with adults across professional contexts.

PUP3251 Critical Reflection and Integrated Professional Practice (20 credits)

Critical Reflection and Integrated Professional Practice enables you to further develop and integrate your knowledge and skills in nursing and social work through a range of taught and independent study. The module will engage you in reflective practice and further develop your ability to apply theory to practice in current health and social care delivery.

PUP3252 Integrated Working in Complex Health and Social Work (30 credits)

Integrated Working in Complex Health and Social Work prepares you to care for children with complex health and social care needs, either as an emergency or as part of a long-term, life-limiting condition in a variety of situations and environments. Utilising an enquiry/inquiry based approach to support the delivery of key theories and practical skills, which are research and evidence based, you will be enabled to care for and protect the child/young person with regards to their psychological, physical, mental, social and emotional needs.

Entry Criteria

Entry Requirements

300 UCAS Tariff points, plus at least five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent), including English Language and Mathematics. Relevant natural and applied science subjects are preferred but not essential.

Eligible candidates must provide evidence of study within the three years prior to application.

All applicants have to meet the respective Professional, Regulatory and Statutory Body (PRSB) requirements for good health and good character.

If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University you will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

Some typical examples of how you can achieve 300 UCAS Tariff points are detailed below.

  • A Levels – BBB;
  • BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTEC QCF qualifications) – Distinction, Distinction, Merit (DDM);
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma – successful completion of Diploma to include 45 credits at Level 3, of which 30 credits must be graded Distinction and 15 credits graded Merit.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actual offers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awards may also be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent), there is no maximum number of qualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. This includes additional qualifications such as the Welsh Baccalaureate and Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE), AS levels that haven’t been continued to A2, and General Studies AS/A2 awards.

Career Prospects

What are my career prospects?

On successful completion of the degree, you will gain eligiblity for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified children’s nurse and eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a qualified social worker.

The programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills to be a competent and confident nursing and social work professional. Once qualified, you will be well placed to take up posts in a variety of health and social work settings, particularly in the integrated children’s and young people’s workforce.

Tuition Fees

If you are a UK or eligible EU student joining this degree in academic year 2015/16, you can expect your tuition fees to be paid by the Department of Health upon successful application to the NHS Business Services Authority.
