Edge Hill University’s Computer Science Department is a consortium member of the University of Bath’s Institute of Coding (IoC). We have devised a digital skills bootcamp to run as part of the IoC’s Department for Education (DfE) Lot Two national delivery model. The DfE model is designed to upskill and develop eligible learners who are seeking new career employment opportunities (or developing new products/services if self-employed, or developing new projects, roles, responsibilities if being staff developed by current employer) in Cloud Computing and Data Analytics areas of digital data/business employment. 

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for people with very little, or no prior knowledge of programming, artificial intelligence and machine learning who are committed to developing a career in Cloud Computing and Data Analytics.

To be eligible for this course, you must be over 19 and in one of the following categories:

  • unemployed (free of charge)
  • upskilling for workers in existing jobs who seek to career develop/change to new digital/data employment opportunities (free of charge)
  • self-employed (free of charge)
  • in-house training for an existing SME (SME to pay 30% of the costs).

The Department for Education (DfE) will only fund a person for participation on one DfE funded Skills Bootcamp in a financial year (1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023).

We welcome applicants from unrepresented communities in the Science and Technology sector such as females and the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.  

The learner requirements for this Skills Bootcamp programme are a minimum of five GCSE grades C – A* (4-9) or equivalent, including English and Maths, or Level 3 qualification (A level, BTEC or equivalent). We will also consider learners with relevant skills, interests, work-related experience and those learners who have had a sustained period out of education or whose studies have been significantly disrupted who can demonstrate high motivation and commitment (evidence of motivation, knowledge and commitment in your personal statement).

When does the course start, and what is the commitment?

The course, running for 16 weeks, will start on Monday 6 June 2022 for an average of 20 hours per week (compatible with the DWP requirements) and finish on Sunday 25 September 2022. Each learner will be required to provide employment status data for the duration of the full programme (which includes reporting on your employment status six months after the end of the academic programme. For example 25 September 2022 to 31 March 2023.

How will I learn?

Over the 16-week digital programme, you will be introduced and progress in the following topics:

Semester one

  • Beginner’s Python
  • Fundamentals of Computer Science
  • Database Basics

Semester two

  • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • Cloud Computing Basics
  • Data Analytics – Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Semester three

  • Advanced Python
  • Advanced Data Science
  • Cloud Computing for Analytics
  • Practice Project
