Project title: To research and develop a generous interface
Course: BSc (Hons) Web Design & Development
This project aimed to research and develop a generous interface.
I chose to research Generous Interfaces further as I wanted to develop my research skills. Another reason was that so far there is no definitive answer to a correct Generous Interface, therefore it left it open to add my interpretation and help advance the field with my knowledge.
This project started by looking at existing methods of data gathering and exploration, looking at the benefits and downfalls of searching and browsing then highlighting how generous interfaces allow total freedom to explore the entire dataset in a meaningful way that represents all data. For the research, a generous interface prototype was designed and developed at aiming to create a better generous interface to explore the Victoria & Albert’s data via their API. After creating the interface, various tests, including heuristic testing and cognitive walkthroughs were carried out to examine how well the website was made and to point out any faults and further points to develop in the future.
Overall the testing concluded that the interface was successful as it did create a meaningful representation of the dataset. However, this interface could be further refined and developed by testing more users as a user’s interaction is a vital part to a generous interface and how well they use the system can determine how good the design is.
My time at University
During my time at university, I have developed a deep understanding of various aspects of computer science such as software development, website development and user experience design, which allowed me to understand the planning required before coding a website. I have learnt many new programming languages. The Professional Portfolio was an essential module because it simulated real life, working with clients and preparing me for my future career. I have undertaken a Microsoft HTML extra-curricular certificate which has enhanced my CV. Overall, my time at Edge Hill University has helped me grow as a Computer Scientist and has prepared me for my future career.
