Careers Fair FAQs

What & who is the Computing Careers Fair for?

The Fair is for students of ALL year groups to help you find career, placement and other work experience opportunities. It is vitally important that as well as achieving a good degree, that students also make use of their time at university to gain relevant work experience.

The companies attending the Fair are here to advertise and offer vacancies to you; their organisations need graduates, placement students and interns to work in their business and so are looking for you to attend and speak to them on the day!

The companies attending will be offering 3rd / final year students graduate jobs or summer internships; for second years there will be sandwich placements or summer internships; and for first years there will be summer internships. There will also be part time work available from particular companies and opportunities for further study or training. Look through the information further down the page to find out who is offering what!

How should I approach an employer & what should I say?

Employers are coming to the Fair because they are looking for students and graduates to come and work in their business so they need you to approach them and talk to them.

A Careers Fair is an informal setting where you can talk to employers about your career objectives and in turn they can tell you about their company and the types of vacancies they are offering.

The best way to start the conversation is to introduce yourself, say which degree path you’re studying and the year you’re in, and then simply ask the employer what their company does and what they’re looking for. It’s as simple as that, and remember, the employer wants you to go and speak to them!

Good opening questions to ask an employer: Can you tell me a bit about your company? What types of vacancies are you recruiting for? What subjects do you take students / graduates from? How would I apply to work for your company & what’s the application process? What skills are you looking for from students / graduates?

How should I prepare for the Careers Fair?

The best way to prepare is to have a look around this page. Read which employers are attending, what types of vacancies they offer and where they’re based; use the map below! You can then make a list of the companies you want to go and talk to.

Its also a good idea to take some print outs of your CV to give to the employers. Employers like this as it gives them the chance to remember who they’ve spoken to and they can then contact you about interviews / applications after the Fair. You can speak to the Careers Centre, the Computer Science Department’s Employability Staff, or one of your Tutors to help polish up your CV!

Who can help me with my CV?

Ahead of the Fair, you should visit the Careers Centre for help with your CV. Book an appointment with a Careers Advisor through Career Hub

You can also send your CV to our Departmental staff for review:
Helen Walters, helen.walters@edgehill.ac.uk.

What are you looking for? Find out which companies you should go and see!

Pick which career path you’re interested in, see which companies are offering roles in that area and find out what type of vacancies they offer (e.g. Graduate jobs, Sandwich Placements, Summer Internships or Part time vacancies). The confirmed exhibitor list, with details on all the attending companies, is further down the page.
