The Web Factory is a social enterprise project which operates within the Department of Computer Science to deliver web based and other technology and digital media projects for local businesses. At the same time it provides our students with an opportunity to develop their technical and employability skills through working on live commercial projects.
The Web Factory team can draw on all kinds of expertise to develop websites, web-based systems, mobile applications, software development, and other design and development tasks.
The Web Factory is a sub-group within our broader Enterprise Projects Team model which we can apply to any computing or technology related project. Previous projects have included network installation and set up, software quality assurance and error investigations and database builds.

Meet some of our student Designers and Developers:
Since 2010, the Web Factory has employed many students from those in the 1st year through to Masters and PhD level. We also have students from all different degree routes in Computing, including Web Systems Development, Application Development and Systems and Software. It’s the talent and commitment of the students that make the Web Factory such a success and we recruit new members each year.
The Web Factory is a social enterprise with the primary aim of improving student employability. On every project students are driven to develop their technical, project management and interpersonal skills. We want to develop students to be great designers and developers, but also great project managers able to interact with clients, manage their time and workload, and deliver on the demands of commercial projects.
In recognition of the Web Factory’s value as a social enterprise project, we were the recent recipients of an UnLtd Do It Award and featured as a showcase initiative in their 2013 report to the Cabinet Office.
As a result of working in the Web Factory our students have gone to secure some fantastic graduate roles in the web and software industry at companies such as Shop Direct, The Hut Group, Barclays IT Graduate Scheme, Click Consult, Fairbanks Environmental and many more!
