Extra Edge Award

Do you want to enhance your employability skills and improve your chances of future success? If so, the Extra Edge Award is for you.

What is it?

The Extra Edge Award is the Employability Award that helps you to stand out from the crowd and increases your chances of success.  Extra Edge will help you track the skills you are developing throughout your time at university and will help make the process of applying for opportunities in the future easier.

Extra Edge rewards you with points for the work you do for your current, or future, voluntary, part-time work and engagement with the Student’s Union. You can also gain points from an additional range of activities that will help you gain and develop new skills.  

There are four levels of the award: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. You will start on Bronze and if you choose to you can progress on to the other levels.  

You can join Extra Edge in any year of your degree, and it is never too late or too early to develop essential employability skills and experience that employers are looking for! 

Any work can be backdated 12 months from the time you start Extra Edge.

This award is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain some valuable experience and understand how to effectively reflect on the experiences that you have had.

What activities count towards Extra Edge?

  • Volunteering
  • Part-time work
  • Campus Sport volunteer
  • Engaging with the Student’s Union
  • Being a Student Guide and/or Student Ambassador
  • Being involved with a club or society
  • Engaging with the careers team
  • Successfully applying for the Student Opportunity Fund
  • Work experience  
  • Participate in events which promote equality and diversity
  • Participate in events which promote sustainability
  • Attend relevant learning activities
  • Attend Careers events/activities
  • Support or represent students

We will ask you to log your activities and then reflect on the transferable skills you have gained from each activity. Careers staff will provide feedback for you and award you points.

Want to get involved?

If you would like to complete the award, please follow these simple steps:

  1. Log in to Learning Edge where you will see the ‘Graduate Employability’ tile in your courses.  
  2. Navigate over to the Extra Edge tab and open up the Extra Edge workbook.  
  3. Have a read over all of the information in the workbook
  4. When you are ready, click on the ‘overview page’ of the level that you are at. If you haven’t completed the award before you will start at Bronze.
  5. Send us over a quick ‘Ask a Question’ with the title Extra Edge and the level that you are at, and we will allow you access to the award!

How do I get my workbook verified?

I am having difficulties uploading evidence.

The maximum file size for uploads is 10MB and check file type is correct. 

Can I use my placements for Extra Edge?

If you are a FAS student taking part in a mandatory or non-mandatory placement, this will count towards your Extra Edge Award. If you are an FoE or FoHSCM student, placement activity won’t count towards your Extra Edge Award unless you are studying for a non-professional degree.

If you’re unsure whether your placement will count, please contact us via Ask A Question and we’ll be able to tell you.

How can I evidence my activities?

You can evidence your additional activities using the upload section of the Extra Edge Additional Activity Reflection.   You could upload an email confirmation (with consent from the person if this is not an automated email) or an image of you at an event.  A certificate of participation and other electronic forms of verification would be acceptable. 

How can employers/Student’s Union/Student Recruitment verify my hours? 
When you have logged all of your hours you need to share the Extra Edge Hours Log and Reflection with the company/organisation/ Student’s Union/ Student Recruitment for them to verify what you have done.  Instructions on how to do this are on each of the activity log tabs.

I would like to receive feedback, how do I do this?

If you would like to receive feedback on your workbook, you can ‘book an appointment’ with an adviser or use the ‘Ask a Question’  option. Please keep in mind that a response can take up to five working days. You are welcome to submit your workbook for feedback at any time, the earlier you submit your workbook, the more chances you have to resubmit it for further support.

How do I access my Pebblepad workbook after graduating?

Within Pebblepad, there is an option for Alumni to convert your Edge Hill Pebblepad account into an Alumni account, which will migrate your assets into your new account.

If you graduated later than 30 days ago, a member of the LTD team will need to process your Alumni account for you. Please email them at [email protected]

Please note that it takes up to 24 hours for your Assets to transfer over and your account will then be managed entirely by the individual – staff members do not have visibility of Alumni accounts.
