Edge Hill University has had a strong partnership with FY Institute of Technology in Singapore for over five years and has supported over 100 students to graduate through two programmes – the BSc in Business and Management and BSc in Engineering.

The success of the collaborative partnership between Edge Hill University and the leading academic institution in Singapore has resulted in the University’s first overseas alumni association and this week welcomes more graduates to its association.

Keith Cook, Edge Hill University’s Business School Director of Studies (International), praised the hard-work and dedication of the students:

“It is that time of year when we are looking forward to celebrating the graduation of our students along with the students and their (very justifiably) proud families and friends. As the ceremonies are upon us I would like to recognise the efforts of our students based at our partner institution FY Institute of Technology in Singapore, where we have a total of 26 students due to graduate. There are 11 Business and Management students and 15 Engineering Management students. The students have all worked hard (as do all of our students) to achieve their success with virtually all of them balancing study demands with the pressures of working full-time.

“Under the guidance and direction of the Academic Director, Jayaram Menon, and the teaching team, the students have gained some very good results and our congratulations go to them.

“They will be watching the ceremony on-line in Singapore and their names will be read out at Edge Hill. Unfortunately none of the graduating students are able to make the long trip over this year although a few students have done so in the past. I am sure that we will all join in wishing them our congratulations and every future success.”

Singapore students join graduations

To celebrate passing their unique degree course, two Singaporeans flew into England to enjoy their graduation ceremony at Edge Hill University.

International students Genn Seng and Sabrina Loy both graduated with a second class upper in the BSc (Hons) Engineering Management degree.

They had completed their course of study at the FY Institute of Technology in Singapore in collaboration with Edge Hill University but had never visited the Ormskirk campus before. The pair promised themselves that if they passed their exams they would celebrate by coming to the UK to join their graduation ceremony.

“It is a treat we are giving ourselves,” said Genn, Business Development Manager with Pacific Interior Supply, a subsidiary of US-based USG Corporation. “We decided it would be our gift if we passed. I’m so glad to be here and finally see the campus, it is so beautiful and the people are very friendly. We can finally enjoy university life.”

Sabrina, production manager with Edwards Lifesciences, a US-based medical devices manufacturer in Singapore, added: “It has been very tough juggling work, study and family commitments. But Genn and I have been able to support each other and encourage each other, which has been great. It’s nice that we can both celebrate together too. I’ve enjoyed my course and it has really helped my career as I was made manager after completing the programme.”

Keith Cook, Edge Hill University’s Business School Director of Studies (International), said: “We have worked with the FY Institute of Technology in Singapore for five years now and in that time we have seen well over 100 graduates go through our two programmes – the BSc in Business and Management and BSc in Engineering. The students are always highly motivated and extremely capable and we are delighted that for the first time ever two of these students were able to make the long trip over here to celebrate their success with us. We’re very proud of Genn and Sabrina and it was a pleasure to have them with us for such a momentous occasion.

“Our successful collaboration with Singapore has served as a springboard for more new ventures, especially in China. As we establish more university partnerships overseas we hope to see more students from different parts of the world coming to Edge Hill University, not just to partake in graduation events but also to enrol in courses here.”

Also present from Singapore, supporting the students and sharing in the Graduation celebrations, were Mr Jayaram Menon, the Director (Academic Affairs) from FY Institute along with two members of his team, MB Shailajah and Min Liu.

As well as the programmes that are jointly run with Edge Hill University, the institute also run programmes of their own in English Language, Logistics and Information Technology. FY Institute of Technology, Singapore, is well situated, being located in the heart of Singapore’s financial district.

Since 2008 we have had in the region of 100 students graduate from Business and Management and Engineering Management at FY Institute of Technology, Singapore. Some of the full-time students have moved into employment, others have gone on to further study. A number of the part-time students have managed to gain advancement within their jobs as a result of the programme.

We welcomed our first Singapore graduate onto an Edge Hill University Master’s programme last year and this year we welcome four more graduates onto our Master’s programmes.
