Author of the EHU Big Read 2019, Rachel Joyce visited The Arts Centre at Edge Hill University to talk about her book ‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’and answer questions.

She urged students to “step out, find out who you are” and “don’t be afraid” during a frank and moving Q&A.

The Big Read is a pre-arrival shared reading scheme at Edge Hill University, where all new students have receive a special edition of the Big Read title before starting university. The aim of the scheme is to make new students feel welcome, give them something in common with other first year students and create links between them and the wider university community, all before they arrive on campus.

‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ was chosen as an uplifting read, following a retired man on his journey across the country to try and save his friend Queenie, the book is a heart-warming story of love, friendship, loss and hope.

Rachel has written plays for BBC Radio Four, her debut novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Book prize and longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
