The Big Read is an exciting new pre-arrival shared reading scheme in partnership with Kingston University.
All first year undergraduate students will receive a special Edge Hill edition of the Big Read title before starting university. Activities and events related to the book will then follow to encourage community building. All university staff will also receive a copy of the book.
The aim of the scheme is to make new students feel welcome, give them something in common with other first year students and create links between them and the wider university community, all before they arrive on campus.
You can read Rachel Joyce’s note to first year students.
How is the book selected?
The book is chosen through a process which invites suggestions from across the universities. The chosen book is customised by the publishers with the Big Read branding and the name of the University partner. The first page includes a letter from the VC which welcomes students to the University, explains the book is a welcome gift and that theme/ plot related activities will be arranged for them to get involved with.
Where can I get my copy of the book (students)?
All new undergraduate students will receive a copy of the Big Read title in the post. If for any reason you did not receive a copy of the book then you will be able to pick one up once you start university.
Where can I get my copy of the book (staff)?
Staff will be sent copies of the book directly to their department. Alternatively, books can be collected from the drop boxes in various locations around campus, where you can also return your book once you have finished it for someone else to enjoy.
Who else is involved in the Big Read?
The Big Read was first introduced in 2015 by Kingston University. Based on similar reading schemes running in the USA, they have been shown to encourage community building helping students feel welcome and settle in quickly. Following a successful first year, Kingston partnered with several UK universities including Edge Hill and local community groups.
