Research assistant Caroline accessed it during her summer vacation. A group of our students took advantage of it to experience the wildlife and geothermal wonders of the world’s first official national park, Yellowstone in the US.
When it comes to getting a foot on the first rung of the career ladder, most of us need a helping hand. Edge Hill’s Student Opportunity Fund (SOF) is designed to do just that.
The SOF provides financial support to enable our students to take part in activities which enhance their employability, develop transferable skills, and enrich their student experience. All our undergraduates are entitled to apply for up to £2,000 to realise fantastic CV-bolstering opportunities.
That covers many things. Travel and accommodation support for students attending interviews, work experience placements and conferences. Perhaps, assisting student groups performing at the Edinburgh Festival. Or, indeed, enabling students to take advantage of opportunities to develop life- and career-enhancing skills in Yellowstone National Park, as Mollie Burns, one of four undergraduate geographers in the inter-departmental expedition party, attests:
“Alongside witnessing bison, coyotes and bears in the wild, I was also able to travel to some of Yellowstone’s greatest destinations, my favourite being the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This opportunity allowed me to develop vital skills such as critical thinking, adaptability, and team working. These skills will prove hugely beneficial for my future career aim, working in laboratories across the world.”Mollie Burns
The whole point of the SOF is to prevent our students missing out on these great career-enhancing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. So if the only obstacle is a little money, we are here to help.
