Academic governance

The University operates a deliberative committee structure in relation to its academic governance. Academic Board is the ultimate authority for academic matters and it has established a structure of committees and boards to devolve specific responsibilities to.

Committee structure

Academic Governance and Quality Assurance has a broad responsibility for academic governance matters, including its operation, review and enhancement. Processes are reviewed annually and subject to approval by Academic Board. It is supported by 5 committees: Academic Planning Committee, Academic Quality Enhancement Committee, Learning and Teaching Committee, Research and Innovation Committee, and Faculty Boards.
These committees are supported by their own sub-structure.

The Academic Quality Enhancement Committee is supported by the
External Examiner Sub-Committee
Progression and Award Boards.
The Learning and Teaching Committee is supported by the
Employability Sub-Committee
Student Experience Sub-Committee
Regulations Review Sub-Committee.
The Research and Innovation Committee is supported by the
University Research Ethics Sub-Committee
Research Degrees Sub-Committee
Human Tissue Management Sub-Committee
Knowledge Exchange Sub-Committee.
The Faculty Boards are supported by
Committees that between them cover the following remits:
Academic Quality and Enhancement, Academic Planning, Learning and Teaching, Research, Staff Student Consultative Forum and Programme/Subject Boards.

The most senior body in our academic governance structure is the Academic Board. It is supported by five committees: Academic Planning Committee, Academic Quality Enhancement Committee, Learning and Teaching Committee, Research and Innovation Committee, and Faculty Boards. Where appropriate, these committees are supported by their own sub-structure.

The Academic Board is also supported by the Honorary Awards Committee, a joint committee of the Academic Board and the Board of Governors, and the Graduate School Board of Governors.

The Academic Board reports into the Board of Governors, as appropriate.
