‘The Police and Policing’ and the ‘Evolution of Police Education’
In this taster session you’ll consider two fundamental topics:
- ‘The Police and Policing’
You’ll take a look at the historic role of the police organisation from its early inception under Sir Robert Peel. And you’ll take a look at the function of the police service, including the concepts of policing by consent, legitimacy, procedural justice and the code of ethics.
- ‘Evolution of Police Education’
In this part of the session, you’ll explore how the process of joining the police has changed in recent years. This includes looking at the Police Education Qualification Framework and the need for new entrants to the police to study to degree level.
This interactive session will allow you to discuss in small groups about a range of topics, such as the various roles and functions of the police and whether they are expected to do too much or too little. As well as exploring topics that you will study as part of your degree programme.
You’ll also be given a tour of the Crime House and given an explanation of typical crime scenes.
Dates available for this session:
- Wednesday 15 February, 1.30pm – 6.00pm
- Saturday 4 March, 11.30am – 4.00pm
