Does punishment always fit the crime?
Why do we punish people? Should punishments fit the crime? What do we actually mean by this statement?
In this interactive and discussion-based session, you’ll look at a range of examples of crimes and social harms. From the extremely serious to the less so. And explore the reasons why and how societies and states punish in the ways that they do.
You’ll consider some of the basic philosophical justifications for punishment and the problems with each. And you’ll also explore a number of serious crimes and harms, some of which have been severely punished and others in which there has been no punishment at all. This will lead you to a discussion about the underlying problems with the idea that we’re all equal before the law.

Criminal Law: From classroom to courtroom
During your subject taster session, you’ll get to experience a lecture on criminal law, which will introduce you to the key elements of murder and manslaughter. You’ll then apply your legal knowledge to a criminal law scenario. As well as this, you’ll get to take a practical approach to learning by acting as a criminal barrister. Our current student will support you as you prepare legal responses and take to the stand. So you’ll get to experience law in action by observing (and participating, if you’d like) a courtroom scenario. And look the part by wearing the barristers’ wigs and gown.

During your subject taster session, you’ll have the chance to catch up with the expert tutors who’ll teach you. And our students who are currently studying Professional Policing. So you’ll be able to ask them any questions you have and get a first-hand view of what studying Professional Policing at Edge Hill is really like.
You’ll also get to visit our Crime House where you can test your policing skills in one of our search sessions. You’ll employ your criminal mastermind skills to conceal a number of items and then test your search skills to recover items hidden in the Crime House.
