Enhanced Surgical Skills – HEA4255

Overview

This module enables Surgical First Assistant (SFA) practitioners to learn specific basic surgical skills, such as superficial wound closure, knot tying, securing drains, direct diathermisation and wound infiltration.

To ensure SFA students to become competent and safe to practice enhanced surgical skills they are advised that this module will require employer support. The support required includes, formal permission and access to assessment provided by their theatre manager and clinical surgical team. This must be obtained prior to commencing the module. A suitable clinical supervisor/mentor will be allocated to each student, to foster opportunities to achieve clinical competence.

This level 7 enhanced surgical skills module is a theory/practice module in which the student will be expected to have access to a WI-FI, broadband internet ready computer/laptop and a suitable learning environment practice area.

Who is this module for?

Enhanced surgical skills is a module suitable for practitioners who have successfully completed Part one Surgical First Assistant course.

This part two will help the practitioners to progress to learn specific basic surgical skills such as superficial wound closure, knot tying, securing drains, direct diathermisation and wound infiltration with local anaesthetics.

What are the key aims of the module?

This Enhanced Surgical Skills module aims to equip students with the appropriate knowledge and experience that will enable them to safely and competently carry out the advanced surgical skills. Whilst providing the practitioners with an understanding of their professional boundaries and legalities of the role.

How will I study?

This module is normally studied over one face to face session, five online session and one telephone/Skype/face to face tutorials sessions. The module overall takes 18 weeks.

What will I study?

  • Knowledge of the anatomy of skin and tissues.
  • Types of surgical needles and its use in different types of surgery.
  • Principles of suture materials and their use.
  • Knot tying such as simple, vertical and horizontal mattress, continuous and more
  • Superficial wound closure, suturing, skin glue and skin clips.
  • Securing of drains.
  • Direct diathermisation.
  • Wound infiltration with local anaesthetic.
  • Legal, ethical and professional issues.
  • Anatomy and Physiology of wound healing.
  • Principles of wound drainage.

How will I be assessed?

  • Students will be assessed using a variety of methods but predominately through producing a clinical practice portfolio that includes a risk assessment, a clinical supervisor’s judgment on the student’s competence, and a logbook of the clinical hours and skills completed.
  • The students will be asked to complete 6 of each Direct Observational of Procedural Skills (DOPS) and Procedural Based Assessment (PBA).
  • To support successful completion of the module, the student should be exposed to and have achieved competence over a minimum of 50 clinical hours.
  • In addition, there is an academic assessment which consists of a 4000 word case study. Both parts of the assessment must be passed.

Supplement your competencies creating a more comprehensive portfolio which will support you in your application for advanced SFA roles, whilst providing practitioners with an understanding of your professional boundaries and legalities of the role.
