MSci Sport and Exercise Science course preparation

To help you feel prepared for your university studies, we’ve gathered together a range of course related activities including suggested reading, useful websites and some great things to do right now. Open the links below to find out more:

Your pre-entry workbook

An important part of preparing to study on the MSci Sport and Exercise Science programme is the completion of a pre-entry workbook before Induction Week. As part of the workbook you will understand the importance of BASES as the Professional Statutory Regulatory Body (PSRB) for your degree programme, and learn how this will inform your studies during your first year. You will also find tasks to complete which relate to each module you will study during your first year and have an opportunity to write down any questions you have. These will then be addressed during your induction week.

You’ll find out more about Induction Week later this summer.

You should bring your completed workbook to the first meeting you will have with your Personal Tutor who will advise you how it will be used and why it is important.

Suggested reading

You’ll be given more information about which textbooks to read when you begin your studies in September. You’ll also be introduced to the University Catalyst, as well as the many ebooks we have for you to access. In the meantime, please find a list of textbooks below which will help you to prepare for your Year One modules:

  • GRIMSHAW, P., COLE, M., FOWLER, N., and BURDEN, A., 2019. Instant Notes in Sport and Exercise Biomechanics. 2nd Edition. London: Routledge.
  • KENNEY, W.L., WILMORE, J., and COSTILL, D., 2021. Physiology of Sport and Exercise. 8th edition. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics.

  • WEINBERG, R.S. & GOULD, D., 2019. Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology. 7th Edition. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics

Any Study Skills books preparing you for work at university level will be useful.

Suggested materials

Although you’re welcome to bring your own personal playing equipment, all standard teaching and sports materials will be provided.

Appropriate kit will need to be worn for the course. You’re recommended to invest in a good pair of training/running shoes for indoor and outdoor use.

You may have an opportunity to purchase programme specific clothing on your arrival at university. Details will be provided during Induction Week. In the meantime, you’ll need to bring a plain t-shirt/polo shirt and shorts or tracksuit bottoms as kit must be worn for all practical/laboratory sessions.
