Healthcare databases advanced search (HDAS)

Visit evidence.nhs.uk to carry out a database search.
Databases available with your Athens access include; Medline, Embase, Cinahl, PsycINFO, AMED, BNI, HMIC and Emcare.

Point of Care Tool – BMJ Best Practice, Dynamed Plus

BMJ Best Practice

BMJ Best Practice allows clinical staff to search for information on a condition, treatment, or medication, quickly and easily. Summaries are reviewed and updated regularly by physicians and/or experts, who synthesize the quality up to date evidence on clinical topics.

Dynamed Plus is the clinical reference tool that clinicians go to for answers. Content is written by a world-class team of physicians who synthesize the evidence and provide objective analysis.

Anatomy TV

Anatomy TV is an online 3D anatomy programme. It includes visuals which demonstrate function, biomechanics and surgical procedures, as well as supplementary clinical videos and text written by leading medical specialists.

Free Resources

Bandolier  an independent evidence-based healthcare journal summarising evidence on effectiveness. The site contains a useful Learning Zone covering research methods and medical statistics.

BestBETs  a collection of shortcut review articles of the best available evidence. Based around a clinical scenario BestBETs gives an overview of the evidence including a critical appraisal and clinical bottom line.

BNF an up-to-date online version of the BNF, also accessible via the NICE app using your OpenAthens account details.

BNF Children an up-to-date online version of the BNF for children, also accessible via the NICE app using your OpenAthens account details.

Healthtalkonline.org is a database of patient experiences of illnesses and conditions, offering an insight of coping with illness from a patient’s perspective.

NICE an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health.

OT Seeker is an occupational therapy database containing abstracts of systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials. Trials have been critically appraised and rated.

PEDro is the Physiotherapy Evidence Database, providing abstracts of randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Most trials on the database have been rated for quality.

SIGN the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) develops evidence based clinical practice guidelines for NHS Scotland.

TRIP is a medical database, for high quality clinical research evidence. Results are ranked and each item is rated for quality, results can be filtered by evidence type, which includes patient leaflets.
