2nd Annual Widening Participation Research Conference

Mainstreaming Equality in Higher Education?
Tuesday 2nd June 2009
0930 - 1600, Edge Hill University

The keynote speakers opened the debate by focussing on equality in a global context including challenging ‘academic capitalism’ and the commercial bias of league tables (Kathleen Lynch); by considering migration, diversity and gaps in data at a European level regarding access to tertiary education (Mary Tupan-Wenno); and posing the possibilities for convergence of Equalities legislation, widening participation and access. The papers presented discussed aspects of research and practice that bring equality to the foreground. A key message from the conference is despite the bleak outlook, it is important to look for the ‘spaces of hope’ as opportunities for action and building alliances for equality in higher education.
