Equivalency Programme

If you're applying to University and don't possess the desired GCSEs or level 2 qualifications required for your course, our choice of equivalency programmes are for you.

We run equivalency courses in GCSE maths, English and science, in addition to standalone tests in the same GCSE subjects and level 2 literacy and numeracy.

GCSE Equivalency: 12 Week Taught Course

Our GCSE equivalency courses are for those intending to undertake initial teacher training programmes. The 12 week courses can be taken in English, Maths or Science.

You will be required to attend tutorials / lectures throughout this period and therefore will need to make provision for this when considering enrolling. It is essential that you attend the sessions as at the end of the 12 weeks you will be required to sit an exam.

If you are unsuccessful in passing the exam in the first instance you will have two further opportunities to re-sit at no extra cost.

GCSE Equivalency: Standalone Tests

If you are not able to take a 12 week equivalency course we offer a standalone GCSE equivalency test. You will receive a revision pack to study at home and you will be required to sit an exam.

You have the flexibility of choosing when to take your exam from a list of pre-published dates. Once you have made payment, received your revision pack and decided on the test date when you would like to sit your exam, please email edgehilltests@edgehill.ac.uk to book and confirm your place for this date. If you are unsuccessful in passing the exam in the first instance you will have two further opportunities to re-sit at no extra cost.

Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy Equivalency: Standalone Tests

The literacy and numeracy equivalency tests are for applicants into nursing and other selected health-related programmes where level 2 literacy and numeracy is included in the entry requirements. You will receive a revision pack to study at home and you will be required to sit an exam.

You will have the flexibility of choosing when to take your exam from a list of pre-published dates. If you are unsuccessful in passing the exam in the first instance you will have two further opportunities to re-sit at no extra cost.

The tests are also available to existing Edge Hill University students who wish to develop their knowledge and skills further.

Where are the equivalency programmes available?

The 12 week taught courses and standalone tests are delivered at the following venues:

  • Edge Hill University's Ormskirk Campus
  • Holy Cross College, Bury
  • Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology
  • Wirral Professional Excellence Centre, Bromborough

What are the course/test dates?

Standalone tests are available on selected dates throughout the year and there are intakes for the 12 week course in September, January and April at Ormskirk, Bury, Shrewsbury and Wirral.

Disclaimer

  • These tests meet the entry criteria for Edge Hill University courses and do not necessarily hold any currency with other institutions;
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure their choice of University will accept the GCSE Equivalency qualification gained at Edge Hill University;
  • Applicants who apply for a course before August are expected to meet the requirements by 31st August of the year of entry. Given this, it is essential when booking a date to sit the exam you allow enough time for papers to be marked and for you to receive your results. Also consider allowing time for possible resits;
  • If you are unable to sit an exam on any of the published dates there are allowances for mitigating circumstances. Should this situation occur you should contact the Equivalency Team in the first instance for advice on this. There is a formal process where you will be require to complete a form detailing the reasons and this will need to be signed by the Access Programmes Leader.
