Studying at Edge Hill University

What will my course be like?

A typical study programme will involve a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Lectures are presentations to large groups of students and take place in one of the many lecture theatres across campus. Seminars and tutorials involve working in smaller groups (perhaps a dozen students but sometimes less).

Assessment methods vary between programmes but are generally either examinations, coursework, or a mixture of both. You may be required to make presentations, usually given to a small group of fellow students, and some programmes have a practical element.

If you're taking a vocational route such as teaching, nursing or social work you'll undertake a placement whilst many other subjects offer similar opportunities for work-based learning.

How many hours a week will I spend on campus or studying?

Timetables vary considerably between subjects. Some full-time subjects may only require you to be in classes for around 12 hours per week though you should be aware that around twice as much time will be required for independent study.

If you're studying on a programme that involves a work-based experience, you may be required to work full-time as directed by the placement, possibly working the normal hours for staff at a school, organisation or practice.

What’s the campus like?

Whichever course you choose, the programme content will be supported by contemporary, state-of-the-art facilities. Every department offers industry-standard resources, from modern lecture theatres to dedicated laboratories. Our facilities include dance studios, sports therapy clinic, costume and scenery workshops, science labs, newsroom, animation studio, model classroom and a TV studio.

Away from the lecture theatres, the Ormskirk campus is a picturesque, safe environment and offers some of the best sports facilities in Higher Education, two theatres, a library and a choice of cafes and restaurants.

You can take a virtual tour to view our facilities or why not visit us at our next open day to see the Ormskirk Campus for yourself?

What support is available for students?

We offer a comprehensive support service covering all aspects of student life. There’s a dedicated Learning Resource Centre and Learning Innovation Centre offering Internet access, PC provision, quiet study areas, social study areas and extensive library facilities. Helpdesk support is available.

Students are allocated a personal tutor as a first point of contact for problems or concerns but you'll also have access to finance and welfare advisers, counsellors and doctors surgeries.

A dedicated Careers Centre offers expert help finding employment, putting together a CV or just receiving general careers advice and guidance, and there’s a childcare information service if you have pre-school aged children and want advice and support in securing local places.
