Common Concerns

Many of our students don’t arrive here straight from sixth form, choosing instead to return to education after raising a family, pursuing paid employment or enjoying life experiences, such as travelling abroad.

Most students returning to education surprise themselves with their strengths, often not just keeping up with younger students but surpassing them. Whilst there may be differences in your needs and requirements whilst studying, a mutual respect exists between our students and those returning to study are often some of the most enthusiastic, successful members of our community.

Can I balance studying with work and other commitments?

Edge Hill University offers a number of programmes on a part time basis. Most modular degree programmes are also available to study flexibly, meaning you can study selected modules alongside full-time students (with lectures and tutorials during the day).

Your working hours and times of lectures and seminars will impact on whether you are able to work at the same time as studying but most students returning to education manage to strike the balance between their studies and other commitments.

Foundation degrees in particular are designed to enhance your current employment and, as such, generally allow you to combine work and study. If you wish to pursue a full-time degree, we recommend limiting your working hours to less than 20 per week to avoid work commitments having a negative impact on your results.

How much will it cost?

Tuition fees vary depending on the level of study and whether the programme is full or part time. Fees apply to most programmes but there’s no compulsory up-front contribution for full-time students and you can generally take out a student loan to cover the cost.

A student loan isn’t the same as a bank loan. Offering a very low rate of interest, the money you borrow is paid back through the tax system after graduation once you're earning more than £15,000pa. Many students are eligible for non-repayable government maintenance grants and/or Edge Hill bursaries and we also offer Excellence Scholarships up to £2,000.

Visit Fees and Finance for full details about fees, student loans, maintenance grants, bursaries and scholarships.
