Life on Campus

After months of revision, exams, waiting for results, and preparing for the start of the course, 'Freshers Week' marks the start of university life for most students and is designed to provide a mix of both academic and social activities.

One of the best things about beginning a course at university is that many new students are in the same boat, moving away from home for the first time and making new friends. With an extensive list of welcome events during the first week, most students will settle in quickly.

We recognise, however, that the move into higher education can sometimes take time to adjust to and your son or daughter may have times when they feel homesick, worry about making friends, or have concerns about coping with the demands of their course.

Personal tutors and counsellors are available to provide one-to-one support but we're confident it won't take long to feel part of the Edge Hill community, with current students ranking the university in the top 2 in the North West for overall satisfaction in the 2011 National Student Survey.

There's lots to do on campus and your son or daughter's learning experience will be underpinned by cutting edge resources and comprehensive student support.

Things to Do on Campus

Edge Hill University's stunning, award-winning campus spans 160 acres combining historic architecture and gardens with fantastic modern spaces to study and socialise.

Whether it's a quick coffee and catch-up, lunch between lectures or a late night treat, students have plenty of choice from the wide selection of coffee bars, cafes, diner and restaurant, including the £14m Student Hub opened in September 2011.

For nights out, the University Club houses a nightclub and bar. Other options for entertainment include the Rose Theatre, our 200-seat professional venue, or watching a movie at the Short Cuts Cinema. If students wants to get active, we offer 25 acres dedicated to all things sport and fitness.

The Students' Union coordinate numerous clubs and societies which are a great way to try something new, meet like-minded people and enjoy the full experience of university life.

Learning Resources

State-of-the-art resources exist across the campus to ensure students get experience of industry standard facilities in preparation for the world of work.

Whichever programme your son or daughter joins, they will be taught in a modern, inspiring learning environment. Resources across the campus include a mock courtroom, model school classroom, clinical skills facilities, Apple Mac and media studios, environmental science laboratories, modern performance spaces, scenery and costume workshops, sports laboratories and a sports therapy clinic.

In addition to the cutting edge resources in each academic department, there's impressive library and IT facilities including 230,000 books and DVDs, 54,000 e-books, 15,000 e-journals, 100+ online databases, 24-hour PC access, quiet study rooms and social learning areas.

Student Support

We have a range of support mechanisms in place to ensure that students will have access to extensive practical advice, help and support throughout their course.

Each student is allocated a personal tutor who will be the first point of contact for queries and concerns and who can give advice on where to get more help.

Our Student Services team provide comprehensive advice and support on everything from finance to accommodation and offer a confidential counselling service and multi-faith chaplaincy. There's also a health and wellbeing centre including a GP practice and dentist. The award-winning Careers Centre can offer your son or daughter many opportunities for developing their skills and gaining work experience.

Student Services have been awarded the Frank Buttle Trust Quality Mark which recognises institutions who go further to support students who have been in public care, while dedicated support for students with a disability or specific learning difficulty (SpLD) is offered through the Inclusive Services team.

The University's efforts in helping students to succeed have been recognised in the 2011 National Student Survey where Edge Hill students voted the institution in the top 2 in England for personal development. The University has also been ranked in the top 4 in England for graduate employment in the Higher Education Statistics Agency's 2011 First Destinations Survey.
