Fees and Financial Support

A recent Department of Enterprise research report estimated that a typical UK graduate earned £160,000 more in lifetime earnings than a non-graduate highlighting. With Edge Hill in the top 4 universities in England for graduate employment, you can be confident your son or daughter is making a real investment in their future by studying with us.

Student finance is an area that parents frequently have questions about but which can often seem confusing. There has been considerable news about going to university in 2012, much of which has focused on the tuition fees increasing, however these fees do not have to be paid upfront and a range of financial support measures are in place to help ensure higher education remains accessible to all.

Tuition Fees

From Autumn 2012, Edge Hill University will charge £9,000 for full-time degrees and £6,000 for full-time foundation degrees. However, UK and EU students will not have to pay up-front for their tuition, with the cost paid through a low-interest tuition fee loan which your son or daughter will only start to repay once they have left the course and are earning over £21,000 per year.

Tuition fee loans are repayed through future deductions from salaries at a rate of 9% of what a graduate is earning above £21,000. For example, a graduate with an annual salary of £25,000 will pay back £30 per month, usually taken at the same time as tax and national insurance. If your son or daughter's income falls below the £21,000 threshold at any time, the repayments stop and only resume when they are earning above this amount again. Any outstanding loan is written off after 30 years.

Tuition fees for some of the Faculty of Health and Social Care's pre-registration programmes are currently paid for by the Department of Health.

Scholarships

Edge Hill offers a range of £2,000 Entrance Scholarships for prospective full-time undergraduate students, rewarding determination, commitment and achievement in creative arts, performing arts, sport and volunteering. Outstanding examination results are recognised through our £1,000 High Achievers awards.

The University will also be participating in the National Scholarship Programme (NSP), a new initiative established to support high-performing prospective students from lower-income families.

Grants and Loans for Living Costs

If your son or daughter is joining a course carrying the standard undergraduate or foundation degree fee, they may be eligible for a maintenance grant and an additional maintenance loan to help with living costs, such as food, accommodation and travel.

Eligibility for the maintenance grant is determined by household income. The amount of the loan for living costs is determined by both household outcome and whether or not your son or daughter will be living at home while attending university.

Maintenance loans are paid back in the same way as tuition fee loans after graduation, with repayments only starting once a student is earning above £21,000 a year. Maintenance grants are non-repayable.

Visit www.edgehill.ac.uk/undergradfees2012 for more details on fees, grants and loans for most full-time undergraduate courses.

Different financial support arrangements apply for pre-registration health courses - visit www.edgehill.ac.uk/healthfees2012 if your son or daughter will be training to be a nurse, midwife, operating department practitioner or paramedic for more information.

Applying for Student Funding

If your son or daughter has already applied for a programme starting in September 2012, they will be able to apply for a tuition fee loan, maintenance loan and maintenance grant (subject to eligibility) from early 2012.

Applications for student funding are made online at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance where an online calculator can help students work out how much funding they are entitled to. Our Money Survival Guide has more information on the process. An early application for financial support is strongly recommended.
