Teaching and Learning Development Unit - TLD & Centre for Learning and Teaching Research (CLTR)
The Teaching and Learning Development Unit (TLDU) aims to support the University’s mission:
“Edge Hill University seeks to provide an innovative, high quality and inclusive learning experience underpinned by a commitment to the advancement, dissemination and application of knowledge. As a learning-led University, Edge Hill is dedicated to developing individuals as skilled and autonomous learners in challenging and supportive environments”.
To that end, TLDU operations and personnel are focused on enhancement of student and staff learning and provision of fundamental support for the objectives of Learning and Teaching Strategy.
The TLDUs functions are guided by the operation of its IRD model:
- I = Innovation
- R = Research
- D = Development
components make synergistic contributions to each other.
Research is seen as pivotal to innovation and development, and all activities are informed by research and are generative of research. This is in accord with the University’s position on “Advanced scholarship” which includes the scholarship domains of Discovery, Integration, Application and Teaching and Learning (after Boyer).
Innovation is associated with previous research and, wherever possible, relates to work previously undertaken nationally and internationally. Development similarly involves the application and integration of existing research knowledge. Innovation and development in learning and teaching are thus directly linked to and by research activities supported by, and initiated from, the Teaching and Learning Development Unit.
The IRD model is a central feature of the operations of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Research (CLTR) and complements the SOLSTICE Centre for Excellence’s position on deployment of technologies to support learning based upon “intelligence informed dialogue”.
Thus, the TLDU, with its focus on innovation and development, informed by research, is a key contributor to the University’s overall commitment to Systematic Quality Enhancement.
