Andrew Fleming – Learning & Teaching Fellowship Profile
Background/professional and/or academic origins
As Academic Liaison Manager for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, I am responsible for ensuring that students in the Faculty have access to the learning resources they need and are enabled to use them effectively. My remit also includes Learning Services’ approach to the development of students’ academic skills more generally. I have previously worked in the libraries of the Said Business School in Oxford and the University of Chester, and most recently in the Evidence and Research team at Becta (British Educational Communications and Technology Agency).
Academic and research interests
As an information professional, I have a longstanding interest in information literacy and how it can enable academic, cultural and social participation. Since coming to Edge Hill, I have become interested in how information literacy can be developed within the context of a broader range of ‘learning literacies’ – such as research skills, academic writing, critical thinking and reflection. I believe that the development of such literacies is crucial to enabling students to become autonomous, critical learners in higher education and beyond. In March 2010 I presented a paper on both the theoretical and practical aspects of learning literacies at the LILAC conference in Limerick, Ireland.
Fellowship foci for 2010-11
The primary focus of my fellowship is the development of learning literacies within the curriculum. I intend to:
- explore and define the core skills, knowledge and behaviours students need to be successful learners
- gather and share examples of existing good practice in the development of learning literacies
- develop practical approaches to learning literacies development
- evaluate the impact of learning literacies interventions on the student experience
