A - Z of Waste
The information below relates solely to wastes generated by EHU. The University cannot accept wastes from outside the University.
A
Aerosols
- Please dispose of in residual waste bins. The waste contractor removes aerosols and disposes of them separately off site.
B
Batteries
- Please DO NOT put batteries into residual waste bins.
- Batteries are classed as hazardous waste and must be disposed of via a specialist contractor.
- There is a battery collection container in the Students’ Union for portable household-style batteries
- Please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk Systemk to dispose of larger batteries.
Books
- Reusable library books are donated to BetterWorld Books who will sell a proportion of these on. The University receives a share of the profits and the rest of the money goes to a literacy charity.
- Leftover books and journals that cannot be reused are recycled through a local charity.
- If your department has any books or journals for disposal please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System with details.
Bulbs
- Please DO NOT put bulbs into residual waste bins.
- Bulbs are classed as hazardous waste and must be disposed of via a specialist contractor.
- Please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System for disposal advice.
C
Cans
- Please dispose of in the co mingled dry recycling bins on campus.
Cardboard
- Please flat pack and place in, or next to, the mixed paper and card recycling bins.
- For larger amounts please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System for removal.
Cartons
- Please dispose of in the residual waste bins as our waste contractor is unable to recycle cartons at this time.
Cartridges
- Empty printer and toner cartridges from the multifunctional devices (MFDs) will be collected by the Reprographics Team for recycling.
- Empty printer and toner cartridges from all other printers should be re-boxed (where possible) and sent to the Post Room for recycling.

E
Electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE)
- Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations the University must segregate any electrical waste in order to treat it separately to enable it to be recovered and recycled.
- Please DO NOT put electrical items into residual waste bins as they are classed as hazardous and must be disposed of via a specialist contractor.
- For electrical waste that isn’t IT related, please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System to arrange for collection.
This includes:
- Fridges and freezers
- Small appliances
- Large appliances
Envelopes
- Please reuse envelopes in the first instance.
- Brown and white envelopes (even those with windows) can be recycled by placing in the mixed paper and card bins.
F
Fluorescent Lamps
- They are classified as hazardous waste once they are discarded due to the fact they contain substances that could harm the environment.
- Used fluorescent tubes are replaced by Facilities Management staff and are stored in coffins before being collected and treated by a specialist contractor.
Foil
- Please dispose of tin foil in the residual waste bins.
Food Tins
- Please dispose of food tins in the co mingled dry recycling bins.
Food Waste
- Please dispose of food and drink in the residual / organic waste bins.
- Food waste is sent to Viridor’s Mechanical and Biological Treatment and Anaerobic Digestion Facility where it is recovered for energy.
Furniture
- Where possible furniture is reused on campus
- Alternatively, furniture is collected by a local social enterprise who refurbish the furniture for reuse or break it down for recycling.
- Please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System if you have University furniture for removal.

Glass
- Please dispose of mixed glass bottles and jars in the co mingled dry recycling bins.

Hazardous Waste
- Please DO NOT put hazardous waste in residual waste bins. It must be disposed of separately in accordance with hazardous waste legislation.
- Please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System to arrange for disposal.

IT Equipment

Newspapers and Magazines
- Please dispose of in the mixed paper and card bins.
- For large amounts of these items please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System to arrange removal.

Paper
- Please reuse paper in the first instance by making sure both sides have been used.
- Please dispose of in the mixed paper and card recycling bins.

Plastic
- Please dispose of plastic bottles and plastic food trays in the co mingled dry recycling bins.

Residual / Organic Waste
- This is all food waste and anything else that cannot by recycled in the mixed paper and card or co mingled dry recycling bins.
- Hazardous waste should not be put in the residual / organic waste bins. Please see Hazardous waste for further guidance.
S
Sanitary Waste
- Sanitary waste is classified as hazardous and must be disposed of by a specialist contractor in accordance with relevant legislation.
- Please enter a job on the FM Helpdesk System if bins are full to arrange for collection.
