Fees and Finance: Full Time Primary & Secondary PGCEs 2010/11
Please note, this information relates to full-time primary and secondary PGCEs at Edge Hill University commencing between September 2010 and August 2011 only. Tuition fees and financial support packages for academic year 2011/12 are still to be confirmed.
Home Students
Cost of course
- £3,290.
Payable
- You can take out a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of your fees. This tuition fee loan does not have to be re-paid until you are earning £15,000pa. However, if you wish to pay your fees as you study, it's possible to pay each year in full on enrolment or in three instalments.
Maintenance loans available?
- Maintenance loans up to £3,838 if living at parental home, up to £4,950 if living elsewhere.
Grants available?
- Maintenance grants up to £2,906;
- Supplementary grants may be available for people with children or a disability.
Bursaries available?
- Edge Hill bursary of £500 if your family earns less than £25,000pa;
- Fees for siblings of those studying at Edge Hill and paying the variable fee reduced by £1,000;
- Training bursaries from £4,000 to £9,000 depending on the subject you are studying;
- Golden Hello of £5,000 for Science and Mathematics trainees and £2,500 for Design and Technology, ICT, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, and Religious Education;
- £200 Learning Support package.
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees at Edge Hill University will be £3,290 for full time PGCE students but the institution is offering the following financial support packages:
- No compulsory up-front contribution to fees for any students.
- You can take out a tuition fee loan (available through the Student Loans Company) to cover fees, paying the money back through the tax system after you graduate. Repayments won’t start until you are earning £15,000pa. Alternatively, if you wish to pay your fees as you study, it's possible to pay each year in full on enrolment or in three instalments.
- Parents are not expected to contribute towards tuition fees.
Maintenance Loan
This means-tested loan is to help with living expenses. The amount you're entitled to depends on your family income and whether you'll be living at home. If you're living at home, the maximum you're entitled to is £3,838 for programmes starting in September 2010. If you're living away from home, the maximum amount is £4,950. You’ll be able to get 72% of the maximum amount that applies to you whatever your household income.
As with tuition fee loans, you pay the money back through the tax system after you graduate. Repayments won’t start until you're earning £15000pa.
Maintenance Grants
The level of maintenance grant you can receive depends on your household income:
- £25,000pa and below - eligible for maximum grant of £2,906
- £30,000pa - eligible for partial grant of £1,906
- £34,000pa - eligible for partial grant of £1,160
- £40,000pa - eligible for partial grant of £711
- £50,020pa - eligible for partial grant of £50
- £50,778pa and above - not eligible for this grant
Bursaries
Edge Hill is offering extra funding for full-time undergraduate students through financial support including bursaries.
Students with a family income of less than £25,000 will be entitled to an Edge Hill bursary of £500.
To help out with the day to day costs of studying, any home / EU students on a full-time undergraduate degree who are paying the full tuition fee are entitled to a £200 Learning Support Package (LSP) to spend on books and other learning materials. You will receive your LSP when you have enrolled. You qualify for new LSP of £200 each time you progress onto the next year of your course.
If you have a brother or sister studying at Edge Hill University on a course that charges the full tuition fee, your tuition fees and those of your sibling will be reduced by £1,000 per annum.

In addition to the above, full-time PGCE students can expect to receive a training bursary and, for some subjects, golden hellos:
- Business Education - £4,000 training bursary;
- Design and Technology - £9,000 training bursary, £2,500 golden hello;
- English - £6,000 training bursary;
- Geography - £6,000 training bursary;
- History - £4,000 training bursary;
- ICT - £9,000 training bursary, £2,500 golden hello;
- Manufacturing and Product Design - £9,000 training bursary;
- Mathematics - £9,000 training bursary, £5,000 golden hello;
- Modern Foreign Languages - £6,000 training bursary, £2,500 golden hello;
- Music - £6,000 training bursary, £2,500 golden hello;
- Primary Education - £4,000 training bursary;
- Physical Education - £4,000 training bursary;
- Psychology - £4,000 training bursary;
- Religious Education - £6,000 training bursary, £2,500 golden hello;
- Science - £6,000 training bursary, £5,000 golden hello.
Golden Hellos are taxed but bursaries are untaxed.
Please note, the above fees and bursaries information applies to home students only. In order to be eligible for an Edge Hill Bursary, it is essential that you complete and sign the Bursary Consent Statements in Section 13 (page 26) of the PN1 form. For students deferring entry to Edge Hill University, the bursaries and fees applicable are those which prevail in the year of entry and not the time of an offer or acceptance of a place.
CertHE / PGCE Post-Compulsory Education and Training
Tuition fees for this programme are £3,290pa for full-time study for academic year 2010/11 with the chance to apply for a repayable maintenance loan and a non-repayable maintenance grant to help cover your tuition costs.
If you are studying PCET Mathematics, Science, Construction or Skills for Life (Numeracy) you may be eligible for a tax-free non-repayable bursary of £7,000.
If you are studying PCET Business Administration, Design & Technology, English, Engineering, ICT or Health and Social Care you may be eligible for a tax-free non-repayable bursary of £4,000.
Please note, these bursary amounts apply for academic year 2010/11 only and are subject to change for 2011/12. There is no direct entitlement to this bursary and it is offered subject to availability. If you work as a teacher and are paid during your study period then you cannot receive the training bursary.

EU Students
EU students on full-time PGCEs pay the same fees as home students and are also eligible for tuition fee loans, training bursaries, Golden Hellos, Edge Hill bursaries and the Edge Hill Unicard.
