This is a course designed to meet the needs of medical educators. It will enable you to meet the new General Medical Council (GMC) standards for trainers and be accredited by the North Western Deanery as clinical or educational supervisors.

2012 Entry Requirements

You need to have a relevant honours degree, usually in medicine, to join this programme. You should be a hospital doctor, consultant, Staff-grade and Associate Specialist (SAS) or higher specialty trainee (ST3 and above). The programme is managed and delivered collaboratively with the North Western Deanery and as such is only open to those working within the North Western Deanery.

Who is this course for?

The programme is suitable for consultants, higher specialty trainees and non-consultant career-grade doctors working within the North Western Deanery.

What will I gain from this programme?

Successful completion of this course will enable current and potential supervisors to evidence appropriate training to meet new General Medical Council (GMC) requirements for the supervision of trainees.

How we will support you

You will have a personal academic tutor and be part of an online learning set for peer support. You will also have access to specially produced learning materials via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard).

What will I study?

The course comprises three modules. The first ‘Teaching and Learning in the Medical Workplace’ gives you an introduction to medical education in the clinical workplace. You will then undertake a more in-depth exploration of the subject in the ‘Supporting the Postgraduate Learner in the Medical Workplace’ module.

The final module ‘Managing and Developing Medical Education’ introduces and raises your awareness of the key concepts involved in leadership and management within the medical workplace. You will also study a range of approaches to medical education and discover the principles of educational leadership, curriculum planning and course design.

How will I study?

The course requires attendance at one full induction day and occasional half-day workshops, but it primarily comprises substantial studying online.

Who will be teaching me?

The course team consists of a mixture of academic staff and experienced medical educators from clinical practice. You can expect to have contact with both academic tutors and experienced clinicians throughout the course. The course team has over 10 years’ experience of designing and delivering postgraduate online learning for medical educators.

How will I be assessed?

There are no exams on this programme. Instead, a variety of coursework assignments will be used, including reflective case studies on actual practice, peer observation of teaching, and short seminar presentations.

Modules

CPD4706 Teaching and Learning in the Medical Workplace offers an introduction to medical education in the clinical workplace. The module will raise your awareness of key concepts involved in teaching and facilitating learning, including understanding learning, the educational climate, adult learning, styles of learning, styles of teaching, clinical skills teaching and clinical workplace teaching. You will also explore your philosophy of teaching and peer observation of teaching and be introduced to reflective practice, workplace assessment and feedback, portfolios and supervision.

CPD4707 Supporting the Postgraduate Learner in the Medical Workplace offers you a more in-depth exploration of medical education in the clinical workplace. This module will introduce and raise your awareness of key concepts involved in mentoring, coaching and supervision, drawing on theory, practice, and the broader scholarly literature. You will explore assessing learning needs, learning agreements and learning objectives, and supervising and supporting trainees in difficulty. The module also covers evaluation assessment and appraisal principles before concluding with an introduction to careers support, mentoring and coaching, Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) principles and quality management. Assessment for learning and the use of feedback to support learning will also be considered.

CPD4708 Managing and Developing Medical Education introduces and raises your awareness of key concepts involved in leadership and management within the context of the medical workplace. You will explore a range of advanced skills, such as appraisal, career management and managing the educational experience. You will also study a range of approaches to medical education (including problem-based learning and e-learning), and methods of medical education (such as presentations and group work). The module will also introduce the principles of educational leadership, curriculum planning and course design.
