Edge Hill is committed to developing higher education routes for all members of the school workforce. We enjoy an enviable national reputation as one of the largest providers of teacher education in the country and have also been at the forefront of developing opportunities for teaching assistants.
The range of courses include:
- Higher Level Teaching Assistant training and assessment - Edge Hill is leading the Prime Consortium, in partnership with St Martins College, University of Chester and North Trafford College, as the sole provider of Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) training and assessment in the North West.
- Pathways to Early Years Professional Status - train to become an Early Years Professional, enabling change, leading practice and raising the quality of Early Years provision.
- Foundation Degrees - valuable development opportunities for teachers and classroom assistants. Several programmes have progression routes to selected BA / BSc (Hons) degree programmes.
- Undergraduate Initial Teacher Training - the gateway to a creative, dynamic and varied profession, gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Final year students voted Edge Hill the top North West University for Initial Teacher Training in the 2008 National Student Survey.
- BA (Hons) Early Years Professional Practice and Leadership - develop the knowledge and understanding necessary to work as an effective leader of practice in an early years setting;
- BA (Hons) Children and Young People's Learning and Development - an insight into children and young people’s learning and development, ideal for those seeking future career within the children’s workforce in schools and other educational settings;
- PGCEs - initial teacher training for graduates, available on a one-year full-time basis and flexibly for most subjects;
- Future Teachers Programme - a highly innovative partnership model of teacher training which is based in school rather than university;
- Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics subject knowledge enhancement courses - designed for trainee teachers who have applied, or are in the process of applying, to start a PGCE at Edge Hill University;
- Post Compulsory Education and Training - opportunities to gain a Lifelong Learning UK endorsed qualification;
- Professional Development for Education - supporting the continuing professional development of staff in educative settings, including a new National Award for SEN Coordination.

Want to teach but think you don't have the right qualifications?
If you'd like to become a teacher but think that you lack the necessary qualifications, our high quality, free Fastrack Preparation for Initial Teacher Training programme will provide you with the skills, confidence and qualifications you need to join a Primary, Key Stage 2/3 or Secondary degree course in Design and Technology, Modern Foreign Languages, Maths or Science.
We also offer equivalency tests for those who don't have the required GCSE qualifications necessary for application to Initial Teacher Training courses.
The Learning Experience
At the forefront of teacher education for nearly 120 years, we are constantly reviewing and developing our range of courses and each programme is designed to emphasise the mix of academic, vocational and professional skills, knowledge and understanding.
Our courses provide the springboard to a future career as a teacher whilst also recognising the huge range of roles carried out by support staff and their vital contribution to children's learning and development.
Training takes place at Edge Hill and in a range of education settings, schools and colleges throughout the North West. We have an expanding network of delivery sites and partnerships with schools and LEAs across the North West, in addition to Telford, Wrekin, Isle of Man, North East Lincolnshire and London.
The Faculty of Education
The £9.2million Faculty of Education houses 24 teaching rooms equipped with the latest technology to support teaching and learning, a 300-seat lecture theatre, model school classroom and cutting edge ICT equipment.
Financial Support
From September 2006 a revised package of financial incentives will be available for postgraduate trainee teachers. For undergraduate trainee teachers, loans, bursaries and scholarships are available. Undergraduate trainees studying Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry can also get an additional £7000 bursary in addition to other loans and grants when studying subject modules in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry at Levels 5 and 6.
