There are also opportunities for you to choose options relating directly to your areas of interest and reflecting on your practice is a key feature of the learning process on this programme.

2012 Entry Requirements

A typical offer is expected to be 220 UCAS tariff points from A Levels or equivalent (including HLTA, CACHE, NNEB, NVQ Level 3) together with an equivalent Level 2 qualification in literacy and numeracy.

Please note, in addition to the entry requirements above, if you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University to join this programme you will be required to apply for a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of 'Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults'. How we will support you

Once enrolled onto the programme, you will be allocated a personal tutor who can provide support both academically and personally throughout your degree. You will also have access to support from the programme leader, module tutors and module leaders on the course team.

What will I study?

You will begin by completing a training needs analysis which determines the knowledge or skills you would like to develop over the first year of the degree. You will reflect upon your practice and develop your knowledge and understanding around the theories of teaching, learning and development, working in a multi-agency environment and important aspects linked to teaching, learning and mentoring.

In Year 2, the programme places importance on understanding planning, assessment and evaluation, inclusion, additional learning needs and understanding curriculum frameworks.

In Year 3, focus is placed on applying theories of learning and leading practice in teaching, learning and mentoring. You will also complete a dissertation.

How will I study?

Approaches to teaching and learning will include active participation in practical and theoretical workshops for projects, seminars, student presentations, directed study, support methods, reading and research tasks (including the use of the virtual learning environment and ICT) and the use of flexible learning resources.

Who will be teaching me?

The programme is delivered by experienced and well qualified staff, many of whom will have worked in primary or secondary schools. Other tutors will bring experience from other further and higher education establishments. Many tutors are currently studying for, or have already gained PhDs. and some have strong research profiles and present at many conferences nationally and internationally.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods will vary depending upon each module studied. However, these will include assignment writing, research projects, presentations, reflections and portfolios.

What are my career prospects?

Successful completion of this programme will give you a broad and balanced view of education directly linked to your work experience. You can apply for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) after graduation.

Alternatively, this degree will also provide the relevant qualifications you need to work in education but not necessarily as a classroom teacher; these opportunities could include mentors or pastoral care workers, for example.

Fees and Finance

For academic year 2012/13, Edge Hill University will charge £9,000 for full-time BA, BSc and LLB degrees. Eligible full-time students will not have to pay upfront for their tuition. The cost of tuition will be paid by a loan which you will only start to repay once you have finished the course and are earning over £21,000.

Eligible full-time students can also apply for a maintenance grant, subject to household income, and a non-means-tested loan to help with living costs.

Edge Hill University offers a range of scholarships for prospective full-time students. These include £2,000 Entrance Scholarships rewarding determination, commitment and achievement in creative arts, performing arts, sport and volunteering. Eligible entrants with outstanding grades are recognised through the £1,000 High Achievers Scholarship.

The University will also be offering awards, worth £3,000 in cash benefits and fee/accommodation waivers for academic year 2012/13, to eligible prospective full-time students through the National Scholarship Programme.

Modules

Please note, it is possible to exit this programme after completing years 1 and 2 of the full-time programme with a Foundation Degree in Teaching, Learning and Mentoring Practice.

Year 1

TMP1001 Completion of a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) . A TNA is carried out against Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA) standards or National Occupations Standards (NOS) with targets set to aim for throughout Level 4. A reflection at the end of this process brings the module together.

TMP1002 Introduction to Reflective Practice is linked to work-based learning. Specific work-based tasks are set throughout this level of work and you are required to reflect upon these on completion.

CYP1000 Theories of Teaching, Learning and Development is designed to help you develop your own learning and academic skills, with subject linked tasks about how we learn.

TMP 1005 Current issues in Education and Implications for Practice considers important aspects of the Every Child Matters outcomes and links these to helping children to achieve more.

TMP1004 Teaching, Learning and Mentoring offers an examination of the theories, assessment and behaviours for teaching, learning and mentoring. The module also includes examination of the core subject areas of the primary curriculum (for primary students) and an overall examination of secondary curriculum areas (for secondary students). A blended approach is adopted which means some of the sessions will be individual and away from the classroom environment and may include the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Year 2

TMP2000 Developing Reflective Practice in Teaching, Learning and Mentoring. This module is linked to work-based learning. You will continue to develop your reflective practice through the use of critical incidences, reflecting upon key incidences that have happened during your experience in educational establishments.

TMP2001 Planning, Assessment and Evaluation of Learning. You will be introduced to, and examine, the concept of the planning and assessment cycle and the need for assessment and evaluation to impact upon planning.

TMP2002 Inclusion. You will examine the important aspects of inclusion, including relevant and important documentation. This will be linked to the importance of ensuring that all children are given the opportunity to succeed.

TMP2003 Additional Needs will introduce and examine various additional learning needs of the pupils you support. The module will develop your understanding of a variety of additional needs pupils may have and how educationalists need to meet these to ensure all have access to education.

TMP2004 Curriculum Frameworks examines all the important frameworks that link to the curriculum in education.

Year 3

TMP3000 Research Dissertation involves undertaking a project related to an aspect of teaching, learning or mentoring practice. You will choose your own relevant area to examine.

CYP3001 Research Methods introduces you to research, the importance of research and research methods needed to conduct a dissertation.

TMP3002 Applying Theories of Learning builds further upon theories of learning in particular their relation to teaching, learning and mentoring practice.

TMP3003 Leading Practice in Teaching, Learning and Mentoring Practice will enhance your understanding of and develop leadership in practice relating to teaching, learning and mentoring.
