Details

Who is this course for?

The programme is designed to appeal to a range of healthcare professionals. It will give you the opportunity to develop your understanding of respiratory conditions within the context of your role. Past students include nurses, physiotherapists, health care assistants, occupational therapists and paramedics.

What will I gain from this programme?

You will develop a range of practical skills which in turn will underpin your academic progress and impact on your practice.

How we will support you

You will be assigned a module tutor throughout your studies to provide support in person and by phone and email. A detailed course pack is also provided, outlining useful resources and providing exercises designed to aid your learning.

You will have access to a range of support services offered by Edge Hill University, including extensive online resources, personal support and interactive ICT services.

What will I study?

The Diploma programme covers a range of subjects designed to provide you with the skills base required to provide the highest standards of care to patients with respiratory conditions.

Course content has been geared towards ongoing developments within the field of respiratory care to remain topical and in keeping with the needs of healthcare professionals. Such areas include:

  • Diagnosis and assessment of patients
  • Essential spirometry skills (ARTP accredited)
  • Management of asthma & COPD
  • Non-invasive ventilation
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation

How will I study?

The pathway is linear in structure and consists of three compulsory modules which outline the fundamentals of respiratory care. You will then go on to obtain a further 60 credits to achieve the named award.

If you wish to obtain a University Higher Certificate in Respiratory Care you are required to complete one core module along with a further 30 credits.

A number of different methods are employed to aid your learning. Critical reflection of your own practice is a repeated theme as this allows you to apply new knowledge and skills to the environment in which you work.

Placement

A ‘Negotiated Learning’ module can be incorporated into the pathway. This allows you to work with the academic team to devise content which is relevant to your role and covers the healthcare implications faced on a daily basis.

This differs from a traditional work placement as it adopts a theoretical and practical standpoint, rather than the straightforward approach of a traditional work placement.

Who will be teaching me?

Teaching staff are all trained healthcare professionals from experienced clinical backgrounds who are renowned in both the field of academia and respiratory care. As a team their achievements are varied including:

  • Numerous publications
  • Speaking at national and international conference events
  • Sitting on committees detailing national guidelines in conjunction with the Department of Health

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the programme a combination of written assignments and an observed performance of practical skills are usually used for assessment. Assignments are specifically designed to be critically reflective and to allow you to draw on your own personal experiences working in healthcare.

What are my career prospects?

All modules within the Diploma programme have been constructed with your personal development in mind. Learning outcomes are driven by national guidelines and regulations to ensure you have the clinical skills and understanding required to continue to progress in your field.

Professional Accreditation

Association of Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP) accreditation of HEA 2082: Essential Spirometry including Screening for Respiratory Disease.
