2012 Entry Requirements
280 UCAS tariff points overall, plus GCSE Mathematics, English Language and Science at grade C or equivalent. Candidates are expected to have relevant experience in primary schools.
Please note, for the purposes of initial teacher training, level 2 numeracy and literacy qualifications are not considered as equivalent to GCSE grade C in mathematics or English.
If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University you will be required to meet the Department for Education's standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children. Further information, including a Declaration of Health questionnaire and details of how to apply for a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

Who is this course for?
If you are committed to becoming an excellent, creative primary teacher and you want to acquire a deep understanding of children's learning and the changing Primary curriculum, then this is the programme for you.
This part-time route in Primary Education gives you the flexibility to study and work at the same time.
What will I gain from this programme?
On successful completion of this degree you will:
- Have a strong knowledge of Primary education and good classroom skills, so that you meet the national standards for Qualified Teacher Status;
- Know how to teach in creative ways that excite and stimulate children while ensuring that they make good progress;
- Know that there are a variety of definitions of good teaching and be able to justify your own beliefs while respecting those of others;
- Have a strong understanding of a specialist curriculum area so that you are ready to take a leadership role in school;
- Be skilled in monitoring and managing your own development and learning.
How we will support you
Your personal tutor and your trained school mentors will support you and help you to monitor and plan your own progress.
What will I study?
You will follow four strands throughout your programme:
Personal and Professional Development - you will learn how to study effectively at university and take charge of your own development. You will study how children develop and learn and you will build up the planning, teaching and assessment skills that you need to be an excellent classroom teacher.
Curriculum - you will develop your own knowledge of all the National Curriculum subjects and study how children learn them. You will explore a range of teaching methods, including the use of ICT across the curriculum, so that you can provide stimulating, imaginative and effective learning experiences for children.
Enhancement - you will focus on Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education, developing your own knowledge, making an in-depth study of children's learning and curriculum development, and research a topic of your choice. You will also choose from a variety of option modules such as Additional Educational Needs and The Early Years Foundation Stage.
School-based Training - you will spend a minimum of 24 weeks on placements in a variety of Key Stage 1 and 2 classes during your four years. You will progress from teaching small groups with a partner to teaching a full class on your own as become more confident in the classroom.
How will I study?
Your university experience will include lectures, seminar groups and independent study supported by online and distance learning materials. In workshops you will engage in and reflect on classroom-type activities. In schools, you will observe and talk to children and teachers and try out different teaching methods.
Who will be teaching me?
You will be taught by a range of highly qualified and experienced tutors including practising primary teachers. Your tutors are dedicated to excellence in Primary education and will model good practice to enable you to develop your own teaching style.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment strategies will include portfolios of school-based work, written assignments, oral presentations, and observations of your teaching in schools. You will be given clear assessment criteria and constructive feedback.
What are my career prospects?
Our graduates obtain work in schools across the UK and abroad and we offer excellent support to help you gain a first post as a Newly Qualified Teacher. You will have an ability to teach in Key Stage 1 or 2 in Primary schools, a strong knowledge of Primary education and excellent classroom skills, so that you meet and exceed the national standards for Qualified Teacher Status.
You will also have a thorough understanding of how to teach the Primary curriculum in creative ways that excite and stimulate children whilst ensuring that they make good progress. In addition you will have comprehensive knowledge of a specialist curriculum area, preparing you to take a leadership role in school. Skills in monitoring and managing your own development, and an ability to reflect on alternative approaches to education, will help you to make your own informed choices and aid your career progression.

Interview
Before you gain a place on this programme, if your initial application is successful you will be invited for an interview, which consists of a group interview to find out what you already know about teaching and whether teaching is for you.
You will also complete a written task to demonstrate your command of standard written English and your ability to respond to written text.
All interviewees receive a booklet prior to interview to provide information and support for the interview process.
Fees and Finance
Full-Time Study
For academic year 2012/13, Edge Hill University will charge £9,000 for full-time BA, BSc and LLB degrees. Eligible full-time students will not have to pay upfront for their tuition. The cost of tuition will be paid by a loan which you will only start to repay once you have finished the course and are earning over £21,000.
Eligible full-time students can also apply for a maintenance grant, subject to household income, and a non-means-tested loan to help with living costs.
Edge Hill University offers a range of scholarships for prospective full-time students. These include £2,000 Entrance Scholarships rewarding determination, commitment and achievement in creative arts, performing arts, sport and volunteering. Eligible entrants with outstanding grades are recognised through the £1,000 High Achievers Scholarship.

Part-Time Study
Tuition fees for part-time study on this degree are £75 per credit for academic year 2012/13. A total of 360 credits are required to complete an undergraduate degree. Eligible part-time students will not have to pay upfront for their tuition. The cost of tuition will be paid by a loan which you will only start to repay once you have finished the course and are earning over £21,000 a year.
