There is a named programme leader who will support your progression and provide academic advice to assist your personal development plan. What will I study?
The first three 20 credit modules are delivered in year 1. These modules are linked to the management of work-based learning including the identification of learning needs, methods of assessment and the development of effective teaching and learning strategies. One of the key teaching and learning methods is via the use of supervision in the workplace and you will critically examine models of mentoring and supervision as you develop further skills in reflective practice and self evaluation.
Assessment and appraisal of learners against agreed criteria and a sound evidence base will be critical to participation in these three modules. This is because and they require you to be working with or have access to an appropriate practice based learning environment with responsibility for the practice education of a professional learner. You will be observed in practice by a suitably qualified educator and you will provide a portfolio of work, based on the practice education of a professional learner
Modules offered in year 2 build on the teaching and learning provided in year 1, extending the key theories of adult learning and teaching, particularly those relating to motivation and professional development. You will examine teaching and learning styles together with instructional design and learning materials development. Using this knowledge you will then learn how to use these skills and knowledge in creating high quality learning environments and develop the leadership skills required to support and promote education in practice.
Year 3 of the programme has its focus on research. Researching Practice Education will provide teaching in research design, methodology and planning, enabling you to produce a research project concerning to an aspect of practice education and deliver a related oral presentation. You will access teaching in project report writing, writing for publication and conference presentation skills.
How will I study?
The programme will be delivered through lead lectures, workshops, seminars, Action Learning Sets, group work and critical debates to provide a framework to underpin the development of critical thinking and sharing in the learning process. The approach will be 'flexible' / blended learning where face-to-face sessions are the predominant delivery method supported by the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The attendance is daytime.
Placement
Candidates on the course do not have a work placement. However to satisfy the requirements of the programmes candidates must be working with, or have access to, an appropriate practice-based learning environment with responsibility for the practice education of a professional learner.
Who will be teaching me?
The module leaders are qualified and experienced social workers. The programme leader holds a Social Work Practice Teaching Award and is involved in the education, training and assessment of practice educators.
The modules are delivered by departmental staff who will provide both the academic support and applied expertise that derives from their roles in research, knowledge transfer and continuous professional development in the area of social work and practice education.
Additional contributions will be made through visiting lecturers, service users and carers who have particular specialist expertise.
How will I be assessed?
The assessment strategy will focus on the synthesis and critical application of theory to practice in relation to your practice educator role. A variety of assessment strategies will be utilised to provide balance including essays, presentations, direct observations, reflective accounts, seminars, project work and a practice portfolio. You will be assessed to support your development and to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes.
What are my career prospects?
Successful completion of the course will offer you consolidation in your current job and access to specific practice educator roles (e.g. practice teaching, mentoring and supervision of Non-Qualified Social Workers (NQSW’s) and social care staff).
The programme will give you the necessary skills to progress into management and leadership roles in work-based and practice education and training, workforce development or professional academic roles. For social workers, it will also provide evidence of continuing professional development and support continuing re-registration with the General Social Care Council.
