Details

Who is this course for?

You may already be teaching or training in the Post-Compulsory or Lifelong Learning Sector and as such realise the importance of constantly developing your skills. On the other hand, you may be looking for a first career in education or training or a career change that will allow you to build on your professional experience.

What will I gain from this programme?

Whatever setting you work in, you will gain a wide range of skills which will support you towards becoming an excellent teacher or trainer, and enable you to gain an approved qualification to teach. If you are entering the sector for the first time it will equip you with the practical skills and insights to establish you as a confident and credible teacher or trainer.

What will I study?

You will study six modules which give you a range of skills and knowledge and investigate the current issues in the Lifelong Learning Sector that are most relevant to your individual setting.

How will I study?

The full-time programme is delivered via a combination of taught sessions across two or three days, together with block placements providing a minimum of 150 hours of Professional Practice.

Attendance for the part-time programme is either all day, or afternoon and early evening, or evening only depending on the centre. In addition you need to allow one day per week for a teaching placement providing a minimum of 75 hours of professional practice per year - totalling 150 over the two years.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced tutors together with work-based Subject Specific Mentors.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment strategies are varied and include coursework and observations that focus on developing the knowledge and skills that are useful in the learning environment. A number of modules are assessed through portfolios of evidence drawn from the trainee's professional practice and which encourage the development of innovation in teaching and learning activities. Learner-led workshop topics actively support module assessment and best practice.

What are my career prospects?

Three accredited awards are available within the overall programme:

  • A Certificate of Credit (embracing the professional standards for the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) award;
  • A University Certificate (embracing the professional standards for the Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) award;
  • A Certificate of Higher Education in Post-Compulsory Education and Training, also known as the Diploma to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).

Under the regulations of the Department for Children, Schools and Families for the sector, teachers within 6th Form and Further Education Colleges must begin a Lifelong Learning UK recognised teaching qualification within two years of commencing employment. A recognised teaching qualification is essential to confirm the original appointment. Without such a qualification, promotion and progress is unlikely and job tenure may not be guaranteed.

For those trainees who may be experienced, and even qualified, within their professional sector, for example, Police and NHS trainers, undertaking a nationally recognised qualification will provide wider employment opportunities than would be available with a training qualification only recognised within one sector of lifelong learning.

Professional Accreditation

This programme is fully endorsed by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) who are the government body responsible for the National Professional Standards for Teaching and Learning within the Lifelong Learning Sector.

The National Professional Standards stipulate the minimum professional requirement in terms of knowledge, skills and professional values. Once you have completed this programme, and you have gained employment as a teacher, trainer/tutor in the sector, you will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Status Learning and Skills (QTLS) as part of the professional formation process.
