Details
Who is this course for?
If you are interested in learning two languages and developing in-depth knowledge of a country then this is the programme for you.
What will I gain from this programme?
When you successfully complete this degree, you will be able to gain recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status, allowing you to teach in a primary or secondary school. This programme offers the best of both worlds; you gain in-depth subject knowledge and the ability to teach at both primary and secondary level, widening your career opportunities.
As part of your placement training you will spend five weeks in the second year in France/Germany/Spain, where you will teach in a school. You will begin with observations of a variety of subjects taught, team teach with the class teacher, leading to working independently with small groups or individual pupils, and gradually progress to taking responsibility for whole groups/classes by the end of the placement.
Your 'immersion' into the school and wider environment will have a positive impact on your linguistic skills, as well as experience of the culture. You will also have opportunities to collect resources to use back in your classroom on future placements.
What will I study?
You will study in six areas across the three years of your programme:
- Specialist Subject, Modern Foreign Languages – developing your interest and academic ability in your chosen subject area. You will be supported in learning either French, Spanish or German with the opportunity to take up Second Language Study in Year 3.
- Subject Application – designed to show you how to apply what you have learnt about your subject in the classroom.
- The Core Curriculum – English, Mathematics, Science and Information and Communication Technology – providing learning in the four core subject areas for primary schools and understanding planning, teaching, learning and assessment methods in these areas.
- Personal and Professional Development – understanding your own development as a trainee teacher through exploring different perspectives and your own experiences of the relationship between education, the curriculum, teaching and learning and the development of children and young adolescents.
- Foundation Subject Studies – studying the Foundation subjects of History, Geography, Music, Art, Design and Technology, Physical Education and Religious Education so you understand their role at Primary level.
- Professional Practice – undertaking extensive in-school experience, moving from observer to teacher at Key Stage 2 and Key Stages 3/4. You will also engage with pupils at Key Stage 1.
How will I study?
You will learn through both your time in University and on placement. Learning activities include independent research, oral presentations, composing a language portfolio, debates and peer-teaching sessions. You will develop the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a classroom. You will also learn how to interest and excite pupils about a country, its people and way of life, managing pupils' misconceptions and challenging stereotypes.
Placement
You'll spend 27 weeks on placement in schools, putting your training into practice through observing and assisting individuals and small groups through to managing the learning of a whole class. You will be directly supported by University tutors and School-based mentors. As part of your training you will spend some time in France/Germany/Spain, where you will observe in a school. Your 'immersion' into the school and wider environment will have an impact on your linguistic skills, as well as experience of the culture. You will also have opportunities to collect resources to use back in your classroom on future placements.
Who will be teaching me?
You will be taught by a range of highly qualified and experienced tutors from both the primary and secondary teams, committed to supporting you throughout the programme and providing you with the opportunities to succeed. You'll find your tutors to be enthusiastic about their subjects and model good practice to enable you to develop your own teaching skill and style.
How will I be assessed?
Your work will be assessed in a variety of ways: through written assignments, oral presentations, examinations and in-class tests.
As you progress from observer to teacher in school, you will be assessed through lesson observation reports. Your professional development will be mapped against the Professional Standards for the Award of QTS to lead towards completion of your Career Entry Development Profile at the end of the programme.
What are my career prospects?
You will be able to pursue a range of teaching opportunities in both primary and secondary schools across the UK. We offer excellent support to help you gain a first post as a newly qualified teacher and have a proven track record for trainees securing teaching posts.
Before you complete your degree you will need to pass the QTS Skills Test (Numeracy, Literacy and ICT) and complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) so you can move onto your induction year as a teacher. These are both useful as they provide a bridge between your Initial Teacher Training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

You will also have to complete a simple and short written task in both French /Spanish/ German and English, as well as conducting some of the interview in French/Spanish/German.
