Details
Who is this course for?
This programme is for anyone who wants to teach mathematics to 11-16 year olds and up to A2/VCE level or equivalent standard.
What will I gain from this programme?
On completion of this programme you will have recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This allows you to teach in a secondary school. You will also have practical experience in school and other settings together with a comprehensive set of mathematics skills and knowledge of mathematics to degree level. You will have subject pedagogy to enable you to excel in the classroom as an outstanding teacher.
How we will support you
If you are concerned about your own level of Mathematical subject knowledge, support sessions are offered on a weekly basis in year 1.
How will I study?
You will learn through both your time in University and on placement. The approaches teaching and learning are varied and include lectures, tutorials, independent study, practical workshops and seminars.
Placement
You will spend over 120 days on placement. This puts your training into practice through you assisting in and taking responsibility for classes, and working alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development. Your teaching timetable will increase as your training progresses and you become more confident in the classroom.
You will work with trainees from various areas, backgrounds and abilities, providing you with excellent experience in classroom management and the ability to teach individuals and groups at a range of levels.
Who will be teaching me?
You will be taught by tutors at the cutting edge of national developments within education who write textbooks and mathematics schemes for national publication. We are actively involved in the promotion of mathematics in local schools and each year we run a national mathematics competition linked to The Royal Institution.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through programme work, based on your classroom experience, showing your ability to plan effectively, undertake assessment, and to develop your subject knowledge. Your mathematics subject study is assessed through a combination of programme work assignments, examinations and presentations.
As you progress from observer to teacher in school, you will be assessed through lesson observation reports. Your professional development will be mapped against the Professional Standards for the Award of QTS.
What are my career prospects?
Our graduates work in schools across the UK. We offer excellent support to help you gain your first post as a newly qualified teacher and have a proven track record for trainees securing teaching posts.
Before you complete your degree you will need to pass the QTS Test (Numeracy, Literacy and ICT) and complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) so you can move onto your induction year as a teacher. These are both useful as they provide a bridge between your Initial Teacher Training programme and your induction year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).
