Details
Who is this course for?
This programme is for anyone who is passionate about Mathematics and wants to be a Primary school teacher or a Secondary school Mathematics teacher. Whilst the programme focuses on Key Stages 2 and 3 (7-14 year olds) there is also the opportunity to teach Key Stage 4 pupils.
What will I gain from this programme?
This programme offers the best of both worlds; you gain in depth subject knowledge and the ability to teach at both primary and secondary level, widening your career opportunities. You will gain the skills to help all children learn in the classroom. You will also gain a university degree in the subject specialism of mathematics which demonstrates your academic and technical competence across a wide range of topics.
What will I study?
You will study in six areas across the three years of your programme:
- Specialist Subject, Mathematics – developing your interest and academic ability in your chosen subject area.
- Subject Application – designed to show you how to apply what you have learnt about your subject in the classroom.
- The Core Curriculum: planning, teaching, learning and assessment in the four core subject areas for primary schools; English, Mathematics, Science and Information and Communication Technology.
- Personal and Professional Development – understanding your own development as a trainee teacher, developing as a reflective practitioner through exploring different perspectives and your own experiences of the relationship between education, the curriculum, teaching and learning and the development of children and young adolescents.
- Foundation Subject Studies – studying the Foundation subjects of History, Geography, Music, Art, Design and Technology, Physical Education and Religious Education.
- Professional Practice – undertaking extensive and continuous school experience, moving from observer to teacher at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4. You will also work with pupils at Key Stage 1.
How will I study?
Your time in University will be spent in lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials where you will be given opportunity to develop your skills and discuss a range of topics with your tutors and peers. You will also be given the opportunity to practice the skills of being a teacher within a safe and comfortable environment. You may deliver, for instance, a presentation, role-play, a classroom incident or teach a micro-lesson.
Placement
You'll spend 27 weeks on placement in schools, putting your training into practice through observing and assisting individuals and small groups through to managing the learning of a whole class, and working alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development. Your teaching timetable will increase as your training progresses and you become more confident in the classroom. You will work with trainees from various areas, backgrounds and abilities, providing you with excellent experience in classroom management and the ability to teach individuals and groups at a range of levels.
Who will be teaching me?
You will be taught by tutors at the cutting edge of national developments within education who write textbooks and Mathematics schemes for national publication. We are actively involved in the promotion of Mathematics in local schools and each year we run a national Mathematics competition and Royal Institution Masterclasses.
How will I be assessed?
Your work will be assessed in a variety of ways: through written assignments, oral presentations, examinations and practical workshops. In your final year you will also have the chance to investigate an aspect of classroom practice, producing a detailed research assignment which explores an educational issue in a specific context.
As you progress from observer to teacher in school, you will be assessed through lesson observation reports against the Professional Standards for the Award of QTS.
What are my career prospects?
You will be able to pursue a range of teaching opportunities in both primary and secondary schools across the UK. We offer excellent support to help you gain a first post as a newly qualified teacher and have a proven track record for trainees securing teaching posts.
In the final year of your degree you will need to pass the QTS Skills Test (Numeracy, Literacy and ICT) and complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) so you can move onto your induction year as a teacher. These are both useful as they provide a bridge between your Initial Teacher Training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.
