Details

Who is this course for?

The MSc Management Development is relevant to participants from a range of academic disciplines, as well as people currently employed in, or preparing for, a career in management.

Its nature and learning style make it appropriate for those working in the private sector as well as small and medium size enterprises, education, health and other public services. The course effectively manages the tension between a critical review of current management thinking, and an environment for improving management performance in the context of accelerating change.

What will I gain from this programme?

Candidates who are successful in all the taught modules without a dissertation submission may be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Development.

What will I study?

Although the course is structured around discrete modules, the focus in practice is holistic. The module programmes can be viewed as perspectives on management, rather than compartmentalised courses in their own right, making the experience for participants progressive and developmental.

How will I study?

The course aims to help participants to develop their management knowledge and performance in a supportive and positive environment. You will be expected to undertake a critical and evaluative review of current management theory through a variety of teaching and learning strategies which include work based reflective learning, individual research, group work, simulation, case studies, lectures, seminars and workshops.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is based on coursework from each of the seven modules, plus the dissertation.

Modules

BUS 4016 Leading Strategy and Change explores three key facets of management that have that have become key to organisational effectiveness in the public, private, voluntary and social enterprise sectors. These are leadership, strategy and change. You will examine and critically review internal and external influences on organisational change and strategic management and their subsequent effect on both the organisation and its people. You will also review key literature on leadership and be invited to reflect on your leadership traits and leadership style through individual psychometric testing and performance in group work.

BUS 4017 Management Learning explores management learning, integrating theoretical perspectives with your own work experiences. It considers self, group and organisational learning and invites participants to analyse their own approaches using action learning sets as a context to explore issues and to assist in the generation of responses to work related situations.

BUS 4018 Managerial Decision Making compares rational models of managerial decision-making to what actually occurs in practice in modern organisations. The module considers the economic, social, cultural, political and psychological context within which managerial decision-making takes place. In the module a strong emphasis is placed on your own decision-making and you are encouraged to critically examine the way you make management decisions.

BUS 4019 Organisational Research provides you with the knowledge and skills to develop a proposal for, and subsequently undertake, a research-based dissertation at Masters level. You will engage with essential considerations in research design, including philosophical basis, developing research questions, literature review, and a range of research methods for data collection, analysis and project planning. On successful completion, you will have a well-formed research proposal suitable for a Masters dissertation.

BUS 4020 Corporate Responsibility and Global Issues explores the challenging contemporary issues facing organisations in the 21st century. You will consider the alternate economic and social structures that are applicable throughout the world and how these differences conflict with and collude with the development of the global economy. Other subjects covered include the success and recent questioning of the free market ideology, the international movement of capital, technological developments and the social, environmental and ethical challenges facing organisations.

BUS 4021 Managing Equalities will examine the context in which equality improvement has become part of policy development and decision making processes in the public sector. The module will examine the influence of legal change, political drivers and changes in public perception and expectations against a background of tighter resources and higher demand on public services. You will be encouraged to take a critical approach to the development of equality management in public sector organisations and how far this has been influenced by national, European and other international changes in politics and policy.

BUS 4022 Managing Partnerships has been developed both as a response to the growth in partnership working across the public, private and voluntary sector and as a consequence of the work of the University’s Centre for Local Policy Studies. The concept of ‘partnership’ working is an everyday reality for most managers. This module invites you to think about your own experiences and to locate the drive to partnership collaborative working in both a theoretical and policy context.

BUS 4023 Dissertation is a central component of Masters programmes. It enables you to conceptualise, develop and realise a significant piece of primary research. The work developed can range from library research / archival research through to action-research projects involving qualitative and/or quantitative methods. It builds on the organisational research (BUS 4017) course particularly the theoretical and methodological elements. The topic should reflect and be directly relevant to an identifiable area within the curriculum content and your organisation. You will work closely with supervisors and other members of your peer group in the development of research skills and in meeting the demands of a sustained project which requires organising, writing up and editing.
