This programme offers midwives and nurses working in maternity provision around the world the opportunity to study at degree level. The pathway seeks to enhance critical understanding and promote maternal and fetal wellbeing from an international perspective. You will gain a global outlook on midwifery care, advance your knowledge and develop new skills.

The programme lays firm foundations in the key concepts of midwifery and seeks to foster in you the positive values and attitudes that recognise and respect individual and cultural diversities and challenge discriminatory practice. You will develop skills in critical reflection, critical analysis and application of theory, whilst gaining a deeper insight into the challenges and opportunities facing midwives and nurses working in an international context.

2012 Entry Requirements

To join this programme you should have 120 UK credits at level 5 (or international equivalent) in a relevant health and social care subject area.

If you are an overseas applicant, you will require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. You will also need to gain a student visa (tier 4) and have a current international clearance with the Criminal Records Bureau.

Who is this course for?

This programme is for international midwives or nurses working within maternity provision and UK midwives interested in developing their knowledge in an international context.

What will I gain from this programme?

During the programme you will be supported in developing a critical and reflective outlook to health care practice. To achieve this you will be required to expand your existing knowledge and skills of midwifery practice, problem solve, communicate with clarity, gain an understanding of the research process and utilise research findings to underpin your practice, values and beliefs.

How we will support you

The programme leader will act as your personal tutor during the programme, offering both academic and pastoral support.

You will also have the support of individual module coordinators who will provide tutorials and a dissertation/advancing project supervisor.

What will I study?

Compulsory modules will examine the context of international midwifery and the management of obstetric emergencies.

You will develop an understanding of the research process and look at different research methods as well as the need for an evidence-based approach. Following this you will complete a dissertation.

The final 20 credits will involve studying either a negotiated learning module (only available on the full-time route delivered at the Ormskirk Campus) or a module that examines supporting learning and assessment through mentorship.

How will I study?

You can access this programme as a full time student at Edge Hill’s Ormskirk Campus or you can complete the programme from home at your own pace, developing your academic ability at a rate that suits you.

As a full-time student you will have access to a variety of teaching and learning experiences including seminars, lectures, directed study, group work, negotiated learning and tutorials.

Those studying part-time will have access to a comprehensive range of online materials that are specifically designed to provide you with a rewarding and challenging teaching and learning experience.

Who will be teaching me?

They will be supported by guest speakers who have specific subject experience and will contribute to the richness and variety of the programme as appropriate. A variety of assessment techniques are used including written assignments, presentations, critical reflections, examinations and the development of a portfolio.

The programme will enhance your professional profile and demonstrate that you have both the necessary academic skills and degree level knowledge to support your scope of professional practice.

The programme will also assist you in developing your professional skill base through the concept of mentoring. Mentorship elevates the practitioner from being a good role model, to supervising and supporting less experienced individual colleagues. It is viewed as a key professional skill for all midwives within the UK.

Fees and Finance

Fees for level 6 CPD health and social care modules are determined by each module being categorised as "standard" or "hi-tech". The cost of standard level 6 modules is £380 per 20 credit module and £570 per 30 credit module for academic year 2012/13. The fee for hi tech level 5 modules in academic year 2012/13 is £420 per 20 credit module and £630 per 30 credit module. 120 credits at level 6 are required to complete this BSc (Hons) degree.
