Who is this course for?

This GTP programme is for applicants with excellent subject knowledge in physics, chemistry or mathematics and a real interest in working with young people. You may be a recent graduate or looking for a career change into teaching. The course is particularly suitable if you have leadership potential and aspire to become a school leader or leader of learning.

What will I gain from this programme?

As an Associate Teacher you will gain experience of teaching in at least two contrasting schools and access a network of subject experts within the Future Teachers partnership. Expertise and best practice will be shared within this partnership of schools and you will be well supported by both school and university-based experts in the teaching of your subject.

How we will support you

You will be supported by a Subject Coach in school and a Personal Tutor at University.

What will I study?

At the heart of the Future Teachers Programme is an analysis of the factors that create an outstanding climate for learning. Important issues such as Special Educational Needs, behaviour management, lesson structure, strategies of learning and methods of assessment are all considered. Theories of learning are also addressed as the programme reflects on how learning takes place.

Discussion of these topics is tailored towards their application to the teaching of chemistry, physics and mathematics, dependent on your subject specialism, and forms the basis of school-based assignments for portfolio assessment. You will also complete an action research project on a school improvement issue and paired leadership exercise.

How will I study?

The course will be full-time and school-based. A weekly conference will be held at a partner venue for half a day each week.

Who will be teaching me?

The teaching team have wide-ranging experience in the field of initial teacher training and extensive teaching experience at secondary level. Research activity is well established in the Faculty of Education and tutors have contributed to a range of publications on the subject of initial teacher training, the use of theory in educational research and the theme of learner identity.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be by portfolio assignments completed each week and assessed at Masters level at the end of the programme. A portfolio of evidence for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) will also be required.

What are my career prospects?

Successful completion of this programme will allow you to gain QTS and 120 credits at Masters level. You will graduate well placed to progress onto employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) at secondary school level in the shortage subject areas of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

As all assessment will be portfolio based at Masters level, you will be eligible to apply to continue your studies and gain an MA within one year of completing the programme.

Our proactive careers advisory service can help you to find job vacancies and offers in-depth advice on teacher job applications and interviews, to help you secure work.

The aim of this exciting and innovative GTP programme is to provide excellent career prospects. Teaching is a rewarding job and there are many ways in which you could progress in your career, either in the classroom or in a leadership role. For more information, see www.education.gov.uk.

Modules

Climate for Teaching and Learning is designed to help you understand the factors which enable learning to take place in the classroom and at the same time understand the barriers to learning. You will consider behaviour management as a key issue, comparing different approaches and policies across 2 different attachment schools. This will also link in with other modules on the programme where being able to critically assess school policy on such issues will be a key aspect of preparing for leadership in schools.

Understanding Teaching and Learning focuses on the key aspects of successful planning for teaching and learning. The module will examine the importance of lesson structure and varied strategies for learning, considering exactly how learning takes place both within and outside of the classroom. The need to understand the diversity of learners and how teachers meet individual needs will also be discussed. On completion of the module, you will be able to plan individual lessons and sequences of lessons with appropriate learning objectives linked to outcomes.

Supporting Teaching and Learning is concerned with those aspects of a teacher’s role which involve supporting learners, including those with special needs and disabilities, in a variety of ways. The module reflects the status of inclusion and diversity as key drivers in the current Ofsted agenda and also considers the roles of other school staff in relation to these learners, as well as transition points in school life and between key stages, the pastoral care of pupils and liaison with parents and carers.

Assessing Teaching and Learning involves learning about the different types of assessment and strategies. There will be a strong emphasis on assessment for learning - questioning, feedback, sharing learning objectives, plenaries and self assessment. You will also evaluate your own teaching by assessing the learning of your pupils. The module includes the use of national data for monitoring progress and improving attainment.

Leading Teaching and Learning prepares you for a potential leadership role in a school. The module will consider aspects of teaching, learning and assessment which can be linked to school improvement and leadership. You will also conduct a school leadership project in pairs. This could involve any one of a whole range of possible topics related to leading learning, for example, planning a school trip, developing a virtual learning environment, exploring school resources or examining policies.

Action Research - School Improvement involves planning and undertaking a small scale research project on an aspect of school improvement. The project will relate to the school or department where you are based at the time of the module.
