Route Into Higher Education Fastrack - Preparation for Initial Teacher Training
Summary 2012/13

Fastrack is an intensive, free 36 week Preparation for Initial Teacher Training programme for adults, designed to give you the skills and knowledge to prepare yourself for entry to a specified Initial Teacher Training course at Edge Hill University. Successful completion will enable you to start a full time Initial Teacher Training degree from the following September. The first 30 weeks of the programme are delivered on a part-time basis, with the final six weeks delivered full-time.

2012 Entry Requirements
Ideally you’ll be educated to A/AS level (or equivalent) or have relevant work experience plus have a GCSE (Grade C or above) in a subject area you’d like to teach and have a strong interest in teaching future generations.
You should be able to demonstrate an awareness of your chosen career pathway. Ideally this will have been achieved by having some experience in a relevant setting, through employment, volunteering or observation.
All applicants to teacher training programmes also have to undergo Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Medical clearances, which we will organise for you.

Who is this course for?
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who are able to cope with the demands of an intensive course. If you'd like to become a teacher but think that you lack the necessary qualifications, don't miss out on the chance to join this programme.
What will I gain from this programme?
You will gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to start a specified Edge Hill University Initial Teacher Training programme. As well as specific study skills that you will need to use on a day-to-day basis on your degree course, you will also learn to organise, plan and manage your own time, which is useful in many other areas of life.
What will I study?
The emphasis of the course is on study skills training so you will take compulsory sessions on essay writing, taking and arranging notes, reading effectively, report writing, revision and examination techniques, presentation skills, time management, working in groups, strengths and weaknesses, action planning, target setting, confidence building, presentation skills, group work and course evaluation.
You will also get an introduction to ICT, covering basic IT awareness, the Internet, word processing, CD-ROMs, online databases, scanning and graphics. There is also training in IT for statistics, IT applications and further IT drop-in sessions.
How will I study?
Teaching is through lectures, tutorials, small group work and practical sessions. You will be allocated a personal tutor and have access to the full range of services and facilities at Edge Hill, including the Learning Resource Centre, computer hardware and software, ICT/Internet access and media facilities.
You must be able to attend both the part-time and full-time phase. The course will take place initially for one night per week, typically from 5pm-8pm for 30 weeks, commencing in October, followed by five days per week from 10am-3pm for 6 weeks starting early June. Students undertaking Initial Teacher Training routes will be required to undertake school placements during the operational hours of the school.
Who will be teaching me?
The programme is delivered by a team of tutors who are experienced in teaching and supporting adults returning to education.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through assignments, projects and coursework. You must also achieve a minimum attendance threshold.
What are my career prospects?
The Fastrack Preparation for Initial Teaching programme offers progression onto specific initial teacher training courses at Edge Hill University. The progression routes for students joining the Fastrack programme in October 2012 are currently being reviewed.
