The Postgraduate Certificate in Early Mathematics Intervention provides a theoretical and knowledge base for early mathematics intervention practitioners. It will enable you to reflect upon and make informed decisions about your own practice and to research and contribute to the development of policy and practice on a wider scale.

2012 Entry Requirements

To join this programme, you should be a practising professional working within an educational setting and have an undergraduate degree or equivalent in any subject.

You must have opportunities to work with very low attaining children in Key Stage 1 mathematics.

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may also be considered on an individual basis, in consultation with the Programme Leader.

Who is this course for?

The programme is available to Every Child Counts practitioners, Numbers Count Teachers, and other members of the teaching profession who are interested in interventions.

We may also be able to offer places on the course to teachers who are not directly involved in Every Child Counts but who would like to learn more about how to support young children with difficulties in mathematics.

What will I gain from this programme?

You will gain an in-depth understanding of how to assess and teach children at Key Stage 1 who have difficulties in learning mathematics.

How we will support you

Support will be provided through interactive online discussions with your tutors and other students.

What will I study?

The programme will underpin your work with children by developing your understanding of the mathematics curriculum and pedagogy, children’s mathematical learning and difficulties, and strategies for assessment.

You will also focus on the pedagogy of Early Mathematics Intervention, including working in partnership with parents and others.

How will I study?

You will be introduced to the programme in an optional face-to-face session at Edge Hill University. You will study online using a virtual learning environment.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by a highly qualified and experienced team who are actively engaged in research.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through the submission of portfolios in which you will critically analyse your practice.

What are my career prospects?

Successful completion of the programme could lead you to the start of a career as an intervention leader, mathematics specialist or specialist educational needs coordinator. You will also be well placed to take up leadership posts in primary schools.

Further study at Edge Hill University

Once you have successfully completed the PGCert award, you will have 60 credits that will enable you to progress onto the MA Education (Early Mathematics) or MA Education.

A further 120 credits will need to be completed to achieve the full MA, which is 180 credits.

You can accrue these additional credits by engaging with PBM 4000 Investigating Practice (a 30 credit module) followed by another 30 credit module of your choice. Having accrued 120 credits in total you can then register on PBM 4029 The Impact of Educational Practice – you will attain 60 credits for successful submission of the assessment requirements of this module and then be awarded an MA Education or MA Education (Early Mathematics).

If you want to exit with the named award, MA Education (Early Mathematics), 120 credits of your MA need to be focused on Early Mathematics.
