2012 Entry Requirements

One of the following or its equivalent: NVQ 3 in Care or a related subject; Two A/S Levels, one of which must be in an appropriate subject area; one A Level in an appropriate subject area; AVCE or BTEC National Diploma; a pass from an appropriate kite marked Access course. Exceptionally, five GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English Language will be accepted.

Who is this course for?

This course is specially designed for non-professionals working in mental health or social care settings. It aims to broaden skills and approach mental health positively to promote social inclusion, reduce stigma and improve working relationships with service users.

The first module on the course is shared with the Edge Hill Certificate in Substance Misuse, giving students a broad introduction to factors surrounding mental health and substance misuse issues.

The programme will prepare you to work effectively within a defined area of practice, surrounded by relevant legal and ethical frameworks and in accordance with agreed protocols in your local practice.

What will I gain from this programme?

The modules will help you to:

  • Identify skills and effective ways of building therapeutic relationships with service users.
  • Demonstrate the application of cognitive behavioural approaches in clinical practice to reduce distress symptoms of the service user.
  • Identify the factors supporting positive approaches, reducing the social exclusion and stigma of mental health and substance misuse.
  • Use reflection to enhance learning.
  • Other knowledge and skills gained include time management skills, effective use of Information Technology, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills.

What will I study?

The certificate programme comprises of two modules, which will be delivered on a part time basis:

  • HEA1167 Introduction to Mental Health and Substance Misuse (20 credits)
  • HEA 1168 Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural therapy: Theory and Practice (40 credits)

On successful completion of 60 credits at level 4, students will be awarded an Edge Hill Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Modules within this programme can also be accessed on a stand-alone basis, providing students meet the access criteria for the module.

How will I study?

Learning to be reflective is a major part of this course. Use of reflection will promote value-based practice and identify improvements for self, service users, colleagues and the environment.

Each module will provide various teaching and learning methods, including a blend of lectures, applied practical work, directed study, case presentation, seminars, role play and group work.

How will I be assessed?

The programme is assessed through completion of a reflective account, presentation, multiple choice examination and essay.

Your programme will be delivered at Edge Hill University’s Aintree Campus. Based in the grounds of University Hospital Aintree, this allows you to see at first-hand how a busy hospital runs. The Learning and Information Resource Centre offers state-of-the-art facilities for health and social care students.

Fees and Finance

Tuition fees for this programme are £260 per 20 credit module and £400 per 40 credit module. 60 credits are required to complete the Edge Hill Certificate.
